  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

Not unless something super massive, like a black hole, came close enough for its gravity to perturb Earth's orbit. We'd know thousands of years in advance if that was going to happen.

So no, it's nothing to worry about.

I was watching a video that was talking about the earth being sent out of orbit and falling towards the sun and I started wondering and worrying if that could actually happen.
If God fell asleep at the switch maybe. Don't think that's going to happen though....

Behold, he that keepeth Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep. Ps 121: 4

Most definitely not then since God thankfully never sleeps. :D

Only on TV in an episode of the Twilight zone

When He creates everything new it's very likely we are going to see that happen ;o)
Is that awesome or what!!!! ;o)

Job 38:7

Where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth? Tell Me, if you have understanding. . . when the morning stars (*angels) sang together and all the sons of God shouted for joy?

*check your chart ;o)

Wait a second here...

Do you think that God has to actively keep the Earth in orbit around the Sun? (and presumably the other planets, etc.)

Maybe you missed my point. God never sleeps. Doesn't need to. And as to whether God would actively need to sustain things I don't know. Maybe he does maybe he doesn't. Only thing that matters nothing like the OP mentioned should ever be a concern.

I'm pretty sure that they were joking.

shortest answer: no

short answer: Almost certainly not at any time in the next 5 million years, and possibly never.

long answer: Some of the earliest hints of 'chaos theory' were attempts by astronomers and mathematicians to prove that the solar system is stable. Their inability to do so was a hint that the system is chaotic. Our prediction of the future depends sensitively on our knowledge of the exact locations and speeds of the planets. If a space butterfly flaps its wings and pushes Mercury off by a little bit, the eventual effect could be just about anything. But most calculations seem to show the solar system as pretty stable on a time scale of billions of years.

Your statement (to which I initially replied) *strongly* implied that God needed to actively keep the planets in orbit. I wondered if you explicitly believed that and your answer is that you don't know, but God (like rust) never sleeps.

Some people believe that Jesus keeps the universe going -- right down to the four fundamental forces of nature; and they use this verse to support it:

Colossians 1:17 And he is before all things, and by him all things consist.

In the end, He will simply release His hold on the elements, and everything will go flying apart.

I'm not of that persuasion, myself.

I believe He created those forces to run the universe after the Fall.

In the end, He will order those forces to stand down, and everything will go flying apart.

I figure it's not something I or anyone else for that matter really needs to know if they believe in God's existence.

This is definitely the wiser (theistic) position. Otherwise you'd be forced to have god running the laws of the universe, but forced to obey the laws of physics without choice.

God would not be forced to obey the laws of physics.

When He doesn't, miracles occur.

Like walking on water, resurrecting, and this doosey:

Deuteronomy 29:5 And I have led you forty years in the wilderness: your clothes are not waxen old upon you, and thy shoe is not waxen old upon thy foot.

Factor in turning Lot's wife into a pillar of salt, a burning bush, parting the Red Sea, protecting Daniel's friends in the furnace, protecting Daniel in the lion's den, and a host of other miracles, and I'd say science took many hikes back then.

I would seem that Yahweh had no respect for the laws of physics he allegedly created.

Forgotten the omnipotence paradox already?
Remember you admitted God cannot create a stone he/she cannot lift.

Clothes that don't wear out seems to be rather less impressive than reviving the dead. (Though walking on water is rather commonplace, I've done it.)
