Could the schism really be healed?

Do you think it is possible the heal the Schism of 1054?

For those of you that don't know:

It was the diffrences between the east and west that caused the Catholic chruch to split into the Roman Catholic Chruch and Eastern Orthodox Chruch rites.
They're still affiliated but the E.O.C. but they may not be in union w/ the Pope.

I don't see it happening in the near future. Orthodox bishops probably won't give the same amount of control to the Pope that Roman bishops do, and Rome doesn't appear willing to give bishops the amount of freedom the Orthodox bishops would like. There also are several wounds that still need to heal, including recent ones in former Communist countries.

And all things are possible with God (Mark 10:27)

Unfortunately, I don't see it happening any time soon. There seems to be some desire coming from the Pope, but very little interest from the Orthodox. And I don't think the Pope is willing to give what it would take, and really, how could he? It would be admitting that the Roman Church has been wrong about papal supremacy for 1000 years.

Or maybe it is the Orthodox who will be admitting they are wrong...

In all seriousness, this saddest of rifts I pray will be healed soon. I do see a desire on behalf of some of the leaders within Orthodoxy, but sadly some, like Russian Orthodox, seem more than a little unwilling to enter into dialouge. However, the dialouge that is going on between the East and West does seem to be bearing good fruit, and I pray that the schism will be healed soon.

In the Catholic Eastern Rite churches (correct me if I'm wrong but I don't think I am), the filioque is optional. And while the Orthodox haven't proclaimed these as articles of faith, they hold similar beliefs on the Immaculate Conception, the Assumption and Purgatory.

There was a book written by a Catholic theologian, he was once archbishop of the Archdiocese of Oklahoma City (my archdiocese) which talked about an acceptable 'reform' of the Papacy which would go a long way to healing the Catholic/Orthodox rift w/o harming the beliefs of either branch. When I can remember the name, I'll post it here.

PS: The filoque is optional in Eastern Rite Catholic parishes.

In the Nicene Creed the words "and the son" (from which the Holy Spirit proceeds) are termed the filioque.

The only way that the schism can be healed would be for both sides to admit there have been errors on their own side as well as the other side of the split. Currently the focus seems to be on convincing the OTHER side that they were wrong.

Actually I don't know very much details on the Schism.
Bascially,I know it happpened because of northern and eastern differences but excally what diffrences??

Also, In your honest opinion(if you know enough),which side owes an apology?

You guys have some good ideas. First among equals would be just fine, that is what the Orthodox maintain it was all along. And somewhere I read that in SOMETHING John Paul did lately (sorry to be so vague) he left the filioque out. I was quite impressed and thought that showed real desire for healing. If that were the case, I don't see what the hold up would be.

I will do some research on the filioque and schism and shall return.

It is my prayer that it will be healed, and I think it is very possible that it could be in my lifetime.
