Devotion means "often selfless affection and dedication, as to a person or principle."
Devotional means "Of, relating to, expressive of, or used in devotion" or "a short religious service."
A devotional is when we take time to show our devotion to God the Father and His Son Jesus Christ. We can do this as Mary did when Jesus came to her house in Bethany. When Jesus came for dinner Mary(Lazarus' sister) sat at His feet listening to His teachings. Her sisters was upset because she was distracted in the preparations for the dinner. She asked Jesus to tell Mary to help her, but Jesus replied that He would not because Mary had chosen the better thing to do. Sit at His feet and learn from His teachings. This is devotion.
We should take time to sit at Jesus' Feet and learn from His teachings. We can do this by sitting and reading the Bible, for the Bible is His Words and teachings. Remember Jesus is God, so all of the Bible is His teaching. By taking this time we are showing devotion to Him, but this is not all we need to do.
It is said that if one knows that the Bible is God's Word that is great, so does Satan. What makes us different is that we follow the teachings in the Bible, in our daily lives. Now we are now getting more to the meaning of devotionals. Devotionals are readings of the Bible, can be one verse or many, and we take these and apply them to our lives. We heed the message and live by it. Keeping it up each day encourages us to keep to His commands.
This gets to the heart of what makes one a Christian. One is not a Christian by reading the Bible, or praying the way Jesus said to, or worshipping Him, but it is the heart of the one who does these things. All of these things are very important, but it is our inner heart that truly matters. Is our heart reflective of God and His Love?
Doing devotionals helps keep us aware of His teachings so that we can follow them and so our heart will reflect God in our daily lives.
If you will, I would like to share something that is absolutely awesome!
Before creation, there was God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit. God and Jesus beheld each other, sharing in their love and fellowship. This was and is done through the Holy Spirit. The three represent the Trinity, or GodHead. As we know their love is beyond awesome. After creation, God offered this same love that was shared just between the Father and the Son, to us through Jesus Christ. Jesus came and died and was resurrected on the third day so that no more sacrafices need to be made. For He was the ultimate sacrifice for our sins. Through Jesus and His salvation He gives to us through His death, we can share in this love that was just between the Father and the SOn. How awesome is this, that we can share a love so great that only God shared with His Son?
Our lives are measured to the life of Christ. We can never measure up, can we? In John 17, Jesus prays to His Father, for His disciples and for us. Jesus says that God and Him are one, for Jesus lives in the Father and the Father lives in Jesus. So Jesus comes to the Father and asks that we share in this oneness. Jesus prays that just as God lives in Jesus may Jesus live in us. So it becomes God in Jesus, Jesus in us. This is how we can measure up, because we have Jesus Christ in us!
Devotions whether it be with a devotional Bible, or just the Bible are important to our daily life. We must sit daily at Jesus' Feet to be taught, so we live our lives accordingly. Devotions or rather Jesus' teachings become our strength and encouragement to live for Him, daily.
God Bless
