Coronoa Virus
China - first reports indicate China knew about Corona Virus near the first of December but was not "sharing" information.

Jan 21 - first confirmed case of Corona Virus in the U.S.
Jan 31 President Trump declared public health emergency and shut down travel into the US from China.

Feb 29 - first death in the United States from Corona Virus. 28 days after closing down travel from China and declaring public health emergency in the U.S.

CDC and other health officials state numerous times that quick action in shutting down travel from/to China saved lives - bought time.

-- March 12, 2020
39 deaths --- in which 13 deaths across the US - but 26 deaths happened in one nursing home in Washington State.

Corona virus emerged in Feb 2020 and declared a pandemic March 11 2020.

Swine Flu:
April 2009. Swine flue emerged in April 2009 but wasn’t declared a pandemic until June 2009

2009 flu pandemic timeline summary - Wikipedia
March 28 2009 - first case of swine flu in the U.S.

Obama declared a national emergency, not a public health emergency, in October 2009. The Obama administration declared a public health emergency in April

April 26 - public health emergency in U.S. declared
April 27 2009 first death in the US from Swine flu
12000 Americans died of Swine Flu 2009-2010'

from 2009 flu pandemic in the United States - Wikipedia
As of mid-March 2010, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimated that about
59 million Americans contracted the H1N1 virus,
265,000 were hospitalized as a result, and
12,000 died

At the time that the Obama administration declared a public health emergency, there were already 20 confirmed cases in the U.S.

Clearly the Corona Virus flue event is just starting - and clearly the "flu" is not infecting people by first listening to politicians and rancor among voters.

But with so much political rancor going on facts get lost
- now you can see the differences.

One more difference.. political rancor was "controlled enough" in 2009 so that Obama was not harassed about everything he did or said to try and address it.

The ability of Right wing Americans to generate unintentionally hilarious irony continues unabated.

You just posted an entire rant fulled to the brim with political rancour to complain about people engaging in political rancour.

Outstanding stuff.

Furthermore, even if Obama had the worst record in the history of humankind regards outbreak handling, it is utterly irrelevant to criticisms or issues with the current adminstrations handling of COVID19. Obama bad is not a magic seesaw that means Trump good.

Thx for the perspective.

Trump gave "alternative facts" about President Obama's response to the swine flu.

Obama’s acting director of health and human services declared H1N1 a public health emergency on April 26, 2009. That was when the United States had only 20 confirmed cases of H1N1 and no deaths.

Two days later, the administration made an initial funding request for H1N1 to Congress. Eventually $7.65 billion was allocated for a vaccine and other measures.

On Oct. 24, 2009, six months after his administration declared H1N1 a public health emergency, Obama declared it a national emergency.

By then, H1N1 had claimed more than 1,000 American lives, according to the CDC.

When Obama made his declaration, thousands of people were lining up in cities across the country to receive vaccinations, as federal officials acknowledged that their vaccination program had gotten off to a slow start, with some states having requested 10 times the amount they had been allotted, the New York Times reported at the time.

The national emergency declaration allowed the federal government to temporarily waive or modify requirements of the Medicare, Medicaid, and State Children's Health Insurance programs. It also permitted doctors and hospitals to bypass certain requirements as they responded to H1N1.

PolitiFact - Donald Trump wrong saying Barack Obama did nothing about swine flu

He did make me miss President Obama, though. He was a functional adult.

If you want to put things in perspective, you should grapple with the fact that just over 1000 people have died of it in Italy in approximately three weeks. The different types of outcomes countries are having with this vary drastically depending on how well they're handling it, so treating doubts about the current administration's ability to respond to the situation as "political rancor" instead of concern over a public health crisis is really messed up.

too late to second guess the health scientists - they have already placed their "Seal of approval" on the quick action of Trump in shutting down flights between the U.S. and China ... period

Yes - Obama "functioned" about a month after the first case of swine flu in the U.S. but even then not with a travel ban.

Trump "functioned" about ten days after the first case of Coronoa virus in the U.S. -- and also with a travel ban.

Thanks for bringing that to our attention

Why would Obama have issued a travel ban? It was first isolated in California and I’m not sure they know where it came from.

So what? It's here now and we aren't prepared to deal with it.

The only people getting a seal of approval right now are the South Koreans with their massive testing strategy. Who cares what Trump did more than a month ago if he hasn't bothered to get ready for what was coming in the time since?

So it is "approval" that the President got from the health scientists on that quick action of his.
So it is not very useful trying to find a way to "blame" a politician when someone gets a virus.

No there were plenty of dumb college students in 2009. There were tons of dumb young ppl during the Boomer's youth too.

Older ppl have broken quarantine too. Stupidity isn't age-specific.

It's currently March, not January, and the concern at hand is this country's lack of testing capabilities, not whether or not Trump was correct to shut down travel from China. Nobody needs to "try to find a way" to hold the president accountable for doing his job and responding to a national emergency as it unfolds.

The coronavirus is not an influenza virus... it's more closely related to the common cold.

It's more of a type of flu than a cold. It has more symptoms with it (respiratory start, fever start, chest congestion heavier than cold virus, which is mainly head)
