  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

As United Methodists, we have an obligation to bear a faithful Christian witness to Jesus Christ, the living reality at the center of the Church’s life and witness. To fulfill this obligation, we reflect critically on our biblical and theological inheritance, striving to express faithfully the witness we make in our own time.

Two considerations are central to this endeavor: the sources from which we derive our theological affirmations and the criteria by which we assess the adequacy of our understanding and witness.

Wesley believed that the living core of the Christian faith was revealed in Scripture, illumined by tradition, vivified in personal experience, and confirmed by reason.
There is more about us on www.umc.org Hope this helps.

No. Whose He?
He's this big time Methodist Pastor, who has this "New Model of the Church". I went to his seminar and all he kept talking about was "Core Values" this and "Core Values" that. I thought you might have went to the seminar and disagreed with a lot of it, and trying to rationalize his thinking, (I didn't agree with a lot of it either).

Not sure if this constitues doctrine, but here's my take on Methodism (I was Methodist for 21 years):

First, it's important to know that Methodism has Anglican roots rather than Calvinist. So, they tend to look and feel a bit more traditional than say, Baptists. They baptise infants, but also do confirmation classes and a formal Confirmation later in life (generally in early teens.)

Methodism originally sought to be more humanist than Anglicanism, to take care of the immediate needs of the less fortunate while or before working on their spiritual needs. The Salvation Army is an offshoot of Methodism, and this belief is still very strong in them today. In my area, there are a disproportionate number of old-age homes, homeless missions, etc run by the Methodist church, and this is a testament to their dedication to help humanity.

In my opinion, their humanist side sometimes overpowers their spiritual side, and they can become more of a service organization than a church. I felt this way about two of the Methodist churches I belonged to, but one seemed to have a nice balance. Your mileage may vary.
