  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

"The mystic insight begins with the sense of a mystery unveiled, of a hidden wisdom now suddenly become certain beyond the possibility of a doubt. The sense of certainty and revelation comes earlier than any definite belief...
The first and most direct outcome of the moment of illumination is belief in the possibility of a way of knowledge which may be called revelation or insight or intuition, as contrasted with sense, reason and analysis, which are regarded as blind guides leading to the morass of illusion. Closely connected with this belief is the conception of a Reality behind the world of appearance and utterly different from it. This Reality is regarded with an admiration often amounting to worship; it is felt to be always and everywhere close at hand, thinly veiled by the shows of sense, ready for the receptive mind, to shine in its glory even through the apparent folly and wickedness of Man. The poet, the artist, and the lover are seekers after that glory: the haunting beauty that they persue is the faint reflection of its sun. But the mystic lives in the full light of the vision; what others dimly seek he knows, with a knowledge beside which all other knowldege is ignorance."

---Bertrand Russell Mysticism and Logic (1914)

Admonished for his lack of familiarity with modern science, the Indian mystic Sundar Singh asked, “What is science?” “Natural selection, you know, and the survival of the fittest,” he was told. “Ah,” Sundar Singh replied, “but I am more interested in divine selection, and the survival of the unfit.”

Four Quartets

Men's curiosity searches past and future
Here the impossible union

And clings to that dimension. But to apprehend
Of spheres of existence is actual,

The point of intersection of the timeless
Here the past and future

With time, is an occupation for the saint---
Are conquered and reconciled,

No occupation either,but something given

Where action were otherwise movement
And taken, in a lifetime's death in love,

Of that which is only moved

Ardour and selflessness and self-surrender.

And has in it no source of moved

For most of us, there is only the unattended
Driven by daemonic,chthonic
Moment, the moment in and out of time;
Powers. And right action is freedom
The distraction fit, lost in a shaft of sunlight,
From past and future also.
The wild thyme unseen, or the winter lightening
For most of us, this is the aim
Or the waterfall, or music heard so deeply
Never here to be realised;
That it is not heard at all, but you are the music
Who are only the undefeated

While the music lasts. These are only hints and guesses,

Because we have gone on trying;
Hints followed by guesses; and the rest

We, content at the last

Is prayer, observance, discipline, thought and action.

If our temporal reversion nourish
The hint half guessed, the gift half understood, is

(Not too far from the yew-tree)
Incarnation.
The life of significant soil.

----T.S.ELIOT (1943)
(placed by Raphael's painting Saint George and the Dragon,
A Pageant of Painting from the National Gallery of Art)

(The verses are supposed to line up on each half of the page...I wasn't able to aligne each side up properly:o )

Whenever I groan within myself and think how hard it is to keep writing about love in these times of tension and strife which may, at any moment, become for us all a time of terror, I think to myself: What else is the world interested in? What else do we all want, each one of us, except to love and be loved, in our families, in our work, in all our relationships? God is Love. Love casts out fear. Even the most ardent revolutionist, seeking to change the world, to overturn the tables of the money changers, is trying to make a world where it is easier for people to love, to stand in that relationship to each other.

Living Community

It is quite easy to found a community. There are always plenty of courageous
people who want to be heroes, are ready to sleep on the floor, to work hard
hours each day, to live in dilapidated houses. It's not hard to camp-anyone
can rough it for a time. The problem comes in living with brothers and
sisters whom we have not chosen but who have been given to us, and in
working ever more truthfully towards the goal. A community is only being
created when its members accept that they are not going to achieve great
things, that they are not going to be heroes, but simply live each day with
new hope, like children, in wonderment as the sun rises and in thankfulness
as it sets. Community is only being created when they have recognized that
the greatness of humanity lies in the acceptance of our insignificance, our
human condition, and to thank God for having put in a finite body the seeds
of eternity which are visible in small and daily gestures of love and
forgiveness.
