• CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
 • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

Fool, n. A person who pervades the domain of intellectual speculation and diffuses himself through the channels of moral activity. He is omnific, omniform, omnipercipient, omniscient, omnipotent. He it was who invented letters, printing, the railroad, the steamboat, the telegraph, the platitude, and the circle of the sciences. He created patriotism and taught nations war--founded theology, philosophy, law, medicine, and Chicago. He established monarchical and republican government. He is from everlasting to everlasting--such as creation's dawn beheld he fooleth now. In the morning of time he sang upon primitive hills, and in the noonday of existance headed the procession of being. His grandmotherly hand has warmly tucked-in the set sun of civilization, and in the twilight he prepares Man's evening meal of milk-and-morality and turns down the covers of the universal grave. And after the rest of us shall have retired for the night of eternal oblivion he will sit up to write a history of human civilization.

SHAVING IN THE DARK

How old is the sun today

Where are the shoes of yesteryear

What an evil potato goes through
we can never know, but
I'm beginning to resemble one

Ah, a little light now

It is the hour
the moment
when it becomes possible
to distinguish a white
thread from a black,
so prayer begins

I see a shadowy reflection now our fingers touch

There's nothing like what is

fragile and momentary
as the pale yellow light along the windowsill
in winter north
of nowhere yet
if it were not for winter nothing
would get done

would finally get done

I've been all around this world

and not to die in hell
not to die in the flames of hell homeless with a cell phone please

There's nothing like today

And contributing one's atoms to the green universe
how strange is that

And some have managed to live in constant awareness
that all things, every evil thing
will be forgotten, dispensing
to mourn for every radiant thing, and so seeing
the radiance.

la ilaha il Allah, the first part of the shahada, the declaration of faith. It's difficult to translate, but roughly it's "there is nothing worthy of worship but God." It's usually translated as "there is no God but God," but ilaha is more then just God, it is the center of a person's life. Especially in today's world, we are not just in danger of worshipping other gods, we are also in danger of putting money, our jobs, a car at the center of our life ahead of God

It is quite easy to found a community. There are always plenty of courageous
people who want to be heroes, are ready to sleep on the floor, to work hard
hours each day, to live in dilapidated houses. It's not hard to camp-anyone
can rough it for a time. The problem comes in living with brothers and
sisters whom we have not chosen but who have been given to us, and in
working ever more truthfully towards the goal. A community is only being
created when its members accept that they are not going to achieve great
things, that they are not going to be heroes, but simply live each day with
new hope, like children, in wonderment as the sun rises and in thankfulness
as it sets. Community is only being created when they have recognized that
the greatness of humanity lies in the acceptance of our insignificance, our
human condition, and to thank God for having put in a finite body the seeds
of eternity which are visible in small and daily gestures of love and
forgiveness.

I cannot help wondering whether in these days when so large a proportion of humanity is submerged in materialism, God does not want there to be some men and women who have given themselves to him and to Christ and who yet remain outside the Church. What frightens me is the Church as a social structure. And not only on account of its blemishes. Insofar as the Church is merely a social structure, it belongs to the Prince of this World... I do not want to be adopted into another circle, another human milieu. I want nothing else but obedience - even unto the cross. That is the true haven, as you know: the cross.

The early Christians abhorred and attacked this mixture of the religious and the patriotic. They detested any State religion that forced back God’s rule; they loathed all religiosity influenced by the politics of the moment, and fought against any veneration of the existing power structure. This included any political system with a religious emphasis. These were to be regarded as the inheritance of Babylon, the works of sin and demonism. They were nothing short of the devil’s state and the service of Satan. It was therefore inevitable that in return the state would accuse these people of high treason, of being the enemies of civilization.
