  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

"Skeptical scrutiny is the means, in both science and religion, by which deep thoughts can be winnowed from deep nonsense."

---Carl Sagan

"One of the saddest lessons in history is this: If we've been bamboozled long enough, we tend to reject any evidence of the bamboozle. We're no longer interested in finding the truth. The bamboozle has captured us. Its simply too painful to acknowledge---even to ourselves---that we've been so credulous. (So the old bamboozles tend to persist as the new bamboozles rise...")
;)

----Carl Sagan, "The Fine Art of Baloney Detection"

"If you cannot be merciful, at least speak as though you are a sinner.
If you are not a peacemaker, at least do not be a troublemaker.
If you cannot be assiduous, at least in your thought be unlike a sluggard.
If you are not victorious, do not exalt yourself over the vanquished.
If you cannot close the mouth of a man who disparages his companion,
.........at least refrain from joining him in this."

---St. Isaac of Syria

"Discovering spirituality is like discovering you are in a boat.
Mysticism is like pushing off from the dock. Since many leave safe mooring and perish in the waves, this is not to be done in a cavalier fashion---even though it can be exciting to push off into the deep. The issue is not whether we should push off, for Christians must do so as well if they intend to get anywhere (and that is what the boat is for), but rather of where you are going.....The Christian casts off from this world as well, but with a clear intent to where he is headed, with the best of maps, circumspectly, deliberately. The Christian Mystic arrives, against all odds and dangers.

Thus we launch out with fear and trembling, but trust that He who commanded us to do so can calm the waves, and see us through to His real, safe port."

C.S.Lewis

"My mother used to say to me, 'Elwood' - she always called me Elwood - 'in this world, Elwood, you must be oh so smart, or oh so pleasant.' For years I was smart, I recommend pleasant. And you may quote me."

Do not look to the peaceful man for cudgels.

A bad reaper never gets a good sickle.

A friend by thee is better than a brother far off.

A gossip's mouth is the devil's postbag

Choose your company before you choose your drink.

Do not judge by appearances; a rich heart may be under a poor coat.

He who would enjoy the fruit must not spoil the blossoms.

Praise the fine day in the evening.

The coroner and the lawyer grow fat on the quarrels of fools.

Waves will rise on silent water.

"The first reason for man's inner slavery is his ignorance, and above all, his ignorance of himself. Without self-knowledge, without understanding the workings and the function of his machine, man cannot be free, he cannot govern himself, he will always remain a slave, the plaything of the forces acting upon him. This is why in all ancient teachings the first demand at the beginning of the way to liberation was to "KNOW THYSELF."

---Gurdgieff

"He who gets wisdom loves himself;
He who keeps understanding will prosper."
Proverbs 19:8
