Cool down after workout. How important is it?

I read somewhere that it's important to do 5 - 10 min of a cool down exercise after working out. So I always do aerobic rows, or a few min on the treadmill at the close of my workouts. I just can't remember the importance of this. And I was wondering what are some of your thoughts on this?

Avoid venus pooling, allow your body to redirect the blood through your body, allow your heart rate and respiration to return to normal, and your body to cool off. Keep your head above your heart untill all of this has occured, then stretch.
