  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

* I had a wonderful conversation with my parents(live in a different state)I have been praying that they would return to Mass for many years, well, it happened last Sunday!
I called to check on them, they had just gotten home. My father was so excited about Mass, the Homily was on abortion, the Priest had Parents remove their children to sunday school....then he let them have it! My father said it was the most brutally honest Homilies he'd ever heard. The priest held back no punches. I woudl have loved to have been there for that.

-Abortion - Occasionally, but it's more watered down. He'll usually talking about respecting all life from conception to natural death but won't come out and say "Abortion is a grave evil."
-Contraceptives - Never
-Just War Doctrine - Never
-Euthanasia - See abortion
-Gay Marriage - Never
-Homosexuality - I can remember one time, but he was talking about how we have a responsibility to be charitable to all people, even those society stigmatizes, such as homosexuals
-The Death Penalty- never
-Fornication - never
-Pornography - never
-Divorce - never

And how about non-political issues:
-Hell - Can't remember the word ever coming up since I got to my new church
-Sin - Not usually
-Damnation - Never
-Sunday Obligation - Often
-Holy Days of Obligation - Often
-Purgatory - Sometimes

See that's something that I've only heard a Priest bring up once. But it was brought up during a Sunday in Ordinary Time, so the Priest followed it up with "I know I don't have to tell you guys. You're the ones who actually come to Mass on Sunday."

It was just preaching to the choir. (Literally and figurately. :))

Haha. Gotta start saying it at Christmas and Easter I imagine.

Yea, I would think you would have to.

But it would probablly be so disapointing for a Priest to have to spend the most joyous days of the year scolding people for not coming to Mass. Maybe it would be best for the Priest just to say something real quick after the closing prayer, such as "Remember, brothers and sisters, as Catholics we are obligated to come to Mass every Sunday."

Well if I were the priest, I would say something along the lines of "We're so glad to have so many people at mass today. You're all very welcome here. For those of you who are Catholic, we invite you to share every sunday with us, as it is both our duty and our joy as Christians to receive Jesus in the Eucharist every sunday in the holy mass"

That way you wouldn't come off as looking down your nose at them.

Yea, that would probablly sound much better than what I would have said. :)

After visiting all the parishes in my area, I found 3 priests who are the cream of the crop; the best of the best. They hit all the subjects and speak so eloquently and profoundly, I am blown away every time they open their mouths.

It is priests like those who remind me of why I am Catholic.

Such priests are hard to find, but they certainly exist. One just has to look.

We moved from Alabama to Pennsylvania about 6 months ago. We have been so blessed in both places to have a wonderful courageous young priest and also a very seasoned one. Our parish priest in Al was very conservative and took his role very seriously. He often spoke to us during Mass and after about our responsibilities as Catholics. He addressed most of the topics listed, especially NFP. He had previously served in the military, so he takes war very seriously. What was so wonderful about him was his ability to draw from his own personal experiences and tie that to the Scripture as well as living in today's world. When we moved to PA, we prayed to God to help us find a parish that was as authentic as our former one. Sadly, we had to do some searching as there are 3 parishes in our community. Our Church here is very pro-life and we talk about abortion, euthanasia, social responsibility, poverty, etc. at every Mass. We pray the Rosary each Sunday to end the horror of abortion. During the election, we talked about the war and capital punishment. We talk of course about Sunday Obligation, but we also talk about Reconciliation as well. I don't remember our priest addressing divorce, homosexuality or gay marriage yet, but that doesn't mean he won't at some point. Our Church is vital and our priest is wonderful. He takes his responsibilities very seriously and is not just telling us all what we want to hear. Oh yea, and recently he talked to us about the importance and significance of suffering----definitely not a "feel good" kinda of homily.
