• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

Controlling Your Weaknessess

I did not watch the video, but if I could've controlled my drinking, then I'd still be doing it.

Lack of power is my dilemma which is why I need God to daily grant me a reprieve from an otherwise hopeless condition.

The video was about leaning on God to help you with your problems not yourself. Whatever you suffering with you are supposed to lean on God and ask for his help in whatever your suffering with. If you suffering with alcohol you should pray father God I need help quitting alcohol, if you are struggling with negative thinking you should pray father help me to not have a critical judgmental mind ect. ect. Remember when Jesus prayed for help in the Garden and after he prayed a angel strengthen him well its just like that for us.

IF a person wants to 'continue suffering, struggling', & otherwise managing, or controlling weaknesses,
then in such empoverished behavioral strategies you will stay stuck, no matter how much you pray.

Fortunately, some people are sick & tired of merely 'managing, or controlling' (whatever); and
with skilled guidance, clean/rid themselves of alcoholism, drug-abuse, smoking, etc. - and
you Start this journey by asking yourself WHAT (Quality-of-life wise) ;) do I want?
This enables you to take Active-responsability,
as God/Jesus invited  you in leading... your life & this more abundantly...

Dear Friend,

I don't lean on God, I ride on his back - I've been sober for nearly 6 years. You think I'm being critical and judgmental, maybe so; however, often times if you spot it - you got it.

Are you an alcoholic?

I am, and, just as an observation, not a criticism, I know I didn't ask what quality of life I wanted. It was more, "Anything, including death, is better than this!" And at first the responsible acting was primarily listening and doing what I was told: by doctors, nurses, counsellors and most of all by AAs.
I don't know that I'm in any real danger of riding on God's back; though I suspect I often pain his neck. But, as the years have gone by, I think I've gotten better not at asking "What do I want" but "What does God want of me." Yes, Jesus got an angel to comfort him; but the cup did not pass.

Why in the world are people posting negatively about this video? This is a great video! You guys are nit-picking over a phrase; controlling your weaknesses. Interesting...

Unitynlove, I get why you posted this...I 100% get it. It's not about us, personally, controlling our weaknesses...it's about our weaknesses being controlled (i.e. not giving into temptation) by the only one who can control them...GOD.

However you guys want to put it, but if you're not giving into temptation...it's being controlled.

Forgive me if I came off thinking that you were being judgmental. I didn't mean it like that. I do understand you point of view, and I am truly proud of you stay sober for 6 years :thumbsup::thumbsup: I wish you all the more years of sobriety :amen: all I mean is that we need to take time to ask God for his help that's all. Sorry for any misunderstandings.:cool::wave:

This is a great video for someone fighting temptations ( like a donut) before the physical dependence occur.

I feel it should be mandatory for the people who do an outreach on this topic should have a true understanding of addiction whether personal or educational. So many in that audience are probably addicted and were too ashamed to reach out for help, it would have been good if he had someone there ( discreetly) for the ones suffering to come up (later) for prayer and assistance for places to go if they are physically addicted.

Once the physical addiction is addressed this is a very good video combined with the AA teaching.

I personally heard this type of message in church while deep in my using. I find it parallel to someone standing up there telling someone with cancer to stop thinking about it.
This is the problem with most christian speakers who try and outreach on this topic, unless they have a true understanding of the horrible disease.
I like this guy, and my heart is in a place Now in recovery to receive what he is saying.

My recommendation is to NEVER post on something that you don't bother watching. If you don't want to take the time to watch a post (which is EXACTLY the same as READING a post) then why respond? That's just downright rude. This video is great for those who need it. Just because you don't need it doesn't mean it isn't worthwhile for some to watch. Next time, I suggest you read a post (or watch the video) before responding like you would on any other thread.
