FIGHTING FIRE WITH FIRE
I was sharing with a friend, this evening, an analogy that came to me today about how to do battle with the wildfire of OCD thoughts that rage within our heads. Instead of throwing water at them i.e., looking for reassurance, arguing with the thoughts, trying to solve them etc., I think it's better to do a "controlled burn". To do this we allow the thoughts to be there to a certain extent, on the periphery of our brain without battling them. Another way to do this is to actually start a smaller fire to fight back. How we can do this is to schedule a time to start the fire, i.e. let the thoughts be there and also to encourage them by exaggerating them for a time in order to try and do a scheduled ruminating or worrying time. In doing this we will eventually desensitize our brains to the thought.. the controlled burns keep the fire from spreading and eventually it will burn itself out.. and the thought's wild fire quality will be extinguished.
Just some thoughts I had today about fighting the spikes of OCD. Wanted to share in case it clicks with anyone else.
