To the best of my knowledge, there still is some controversy on whether or not the pill sometimes allows fertilization to occur, but then aborts the pregnancy by not allowing the zygote to develop into a proper baby.

As such, any Christian who goes "it's life directly after fertilization, even it's just a single cell", should think very hard before taking the pill.

(of course, something like 50% of all fertilized eggs already never results in a visible pregnancy, so if God designed a system where every fertilized egg gets it's own soul, it's kinda wasting all those souls that already get lost via natural means. Oh well.)

Besides that, there's all the stuff about needing to go forth and multiply, not wasting your seed, sex only being used for procreation..

Really, plenty of reasons for Christians not to use contraceptives, especially the pill.

It has been my observation that most of human "seed" is wasted, including a lot of it that grows up.

That being said, I like babies and I like taking care of them. I don't favor abortion. On the other hand, some people could do their children a big favor by not having them in the first place.

I see no problem whatsoever with contraception.
Better to stop it before it happens, then try to stop it after or have to live with it if you are unable/unwilling.

The call to be fruitful and multiply certainly does not apply today, in a world which is overpopulated and stricken with famine and hunger. We are called to be good stewards over the Earth, and to continue overusing and misusing our resources as we do now, due too many people needing far too much, is the opposite of that call.

For.
I really see nothing wrong in regulating when your body becomes pregnant. We have all sorts of medical intervention devices that no one blinks an eye out. We use artificial means to control our insulin, our sleep, our hormones when out of whack, etc, etc. Most sperm and eggs are 'wasted' whether you use contraception or not.

OK, this is becoming too much of an agree-fest.

[Devil's Advocate]

Contraception encourages people to engage in more promiscuous sex and damages the purpose of sex and relationships: to have children. Not only that, but it creates a false sense of security which could lead to an increase in transmission of STDs, as only certain types of contraception guard against them, and not all people realise this. Finally (so far), it could pose a danger to societies, as it allows people to have less children, which could lead to a dramatic loss of young people in the population, and the potential for the population decline to become irreversible. Already in many places we are beginning to feel the effects of having a much larger number of elderly people in relation to young workers, and the continued use of contraception will only make this worse.

[/Devil's Advocate]

That's better. If you're lucky I might even try to get some evidence to support that, if any exists. Probably not for the first point, because that's just generic sex-related argument #1.

But that would only be an issue during a transitional phase. After a half dozen or so generations of contaceptive usage, I'd expect the total population to stabilize, and the proportions of young and elderly to equilibrate.

And anyway, we can (as we have always done) import our younger people from other countries. Just make 'em legal workers, and make sure they and their employers pay the taxes to support our pension and health care programs.
