Contraception scenario

I recently watched an episode of "The Shield", first one I watched, actually. Anyway, part of the plot was about this female cop who was undercover with this drug dealer. To maintain her cover as a hooker longer, she had to have sex with the bad guy. They get the guy, she's alright, and at the end of the episode, she tells her boss and the angry fat bald guy and she's fine and just needs some emergency contraception.

I just wondered how anyone in the real world could possibly find that immoral, though I'm sure there are a few here who would take issue with her actions, and I'ld like to try to understand why you would feel that way.

Maybe she should have been using bc before having sex if that was going to be an issue. I have no problem with emergency bc either. But i think the whole scenero is pretty far fetched to worry about in real life.

I'm not Christian but I can give you what I would think would be a reasonable response given the Christian worldview. Sex outside of marriage, except by coercion, is a sin; and this woman, though she might be dedicated to her job, should not have put herself in position where she would have to compromise on her moral values in order to catch a perp. Nonetheless, even if she did, the resulting child is not to blame for her actions and should not be killed just because she "didn't really mean it" when having sex with the perp. She's responsible for the consequences of her actions, even if she felt like her options at the time were limited and even if those consequences are inconvenient.

Is your question regarding her having sex or regarding her wanting to use EC?

I'm not opposed to emergency contraception (or any BC), but I don't think she should have gone that far to keep her cover. I can see the situation happening, but I have to think that there could be a way around it.

so this bad guy decides its a good plan to sleep with a hooker he barely knows without a condom, he clearly isnt that intelligent and i doubt an undercover operation was necessary

The truth of the matter is that playing for the good guys, there are certain strategy you have to scratch out. It's the nature of morality, you are saying that there is something so important that maintaining it and failing and another important goal is better than just reaching said goal at all costs. If this isn't the case then morality is a matter of convenience, something to be followed on sunny days and then thrown away when it becomes troublesome.

So I suppose you can guess from that that I don't think that she should have went that far under cover to begin with. I'm curious how far how thing maintaining a cover should go. If one is trying to become a double agent in a tyranically government, or a mole in the world of organized crime, would be acceptable to execute someone to allay suspicion? If you are arguing from a pure consequentialist standpoint I don't think that it is clear, if the nation you were trying to overthrow had nuclear capabilities then one life against that might seem like nothing. But what is justified to get a shot at taking them down?

I would never attempt to judge such a situation as it would probably never be. There is no case in my career that would ever require such action. The problem here is the scenarios being broadcast as television drama are getting a little bit far fetched and off the wall.

I see no difference in the hypothetical under-cover- agent-playing-hooker and anyone else who needs emergency contraception. The most impossible thing about this scenero is thinking anyone has the right to know the reason WHY EC is needed. So hooker, cop, lazy teenager, or broken condom...dosen't matter.

Try an example from reality.
Several years go a man and woman were in a relationship. They decided to move forward into a sexual relationship. She started taking the pill. He wore a condom. One morning the condom broke...
She had only been on the pill for a few weeks.
They decided to go to the public health center and get the "morning after pill"

Good time to use EC.

IMO, emergency contraception shouldn't be used as normal birth control. Rape, broken condom, or other unexpected situations are good times to use EC. Popping them like daily vitamins, not such a good idea for the female body.
