  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I quite enjoyed the film Constantine. Even though it is just another Hollywood adaptation of a comic book, it holds some interesting views from a theological stand-point. I quite like the end of the film where Constantine sacrifices himself even though he has the opportunity to benefit himself. This in some way reminds me of the events surrounding the Resurrection, because as far as I know Jesus died for the sins of man and was then resurrected a few days later. Once Constantine has spoken to the Devil and he stops Mammon from escaping from Hell, Constantine chooses to have the Devil release Isabelle from Hell and let her ascend to heaven. This self-sacrifice allows him into heaven, however the Devil stops Constantine by allowing him to live. So in a way this is a small reflection... Constantine died for Isabelle's sin in a way, and then was resurrected. I'm not saying John Constantine was Jesus or anything of the sort, just pointing out one of my interpretations of the end of the movie.

On the afforementioned topic of offending people, I think there is no intent in Constantine to offend any particular group of people. John Constantine is just a very dark bitter character. I think some of the concepts in the movie are actually very pro-Christian. Though I'm sure people disagree with some of the concepts of the movie, which is understandable. However it is a work of fiction, a story... and it does it's job as an entertaining one. I loved the movie, saw it twice in the theatres and bought it on DVD when it came out last week. The special edition DVD includes a lot of extra features with some interesting interviews with the cast and crew that include some of their intreprations on the movie and also their beliefs. I found it quite fascinatiing.
