  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

UP FRONT: I'VE NOT SEEN THIS MOVIE.

The advertising teaser for this movie should give some indication of what it's about. Hell doesn't want him, and heven can't take him. It seems to be another in Hollywood's long attempt to glorify an evil as the anti-hero.

Then again, I rarely go to the movies anymore, as it all seems a waste of time and money, regardless of what the critics say is a hit.

basic idea:

Reeves is a chain smoking exorcist who killed himself and went to hell only to be revived (he can see demons and angels and the images drove him to suicide)......he finds out he has lung cancer so he is trying to kill demons to get into heaven (heaven doesn't want him cause of the suicide thing)....anywho it is a comic book so don't expect much biblical basis in it....

btw I have not seen it but read lots about it....undecided if I will check it out......i worry about people who see it and think that Christianity is really like that

I was looking forward to it until I watched some clips and the theatrical trailer. God and the devil make a wager on which side mankind will choose. No direct intervention, just influence...

What kind of petty, cruel, vain god are they talking about? Certainly not MY God who loved mankind enough to put on human flesh and die a horrible death for us. It disgusted me to hear that and I normally like these types of movies. :sigh:

Before I saw a trailer, I thought, "Sweet! A movie about St. Constantine would be awesome!"

And then I saw the trailer....

*vomit*

What makes me a little incensed is that one of my friends from church asked me today if I wanted to go watch it with him. I didn't lie to him about why I didn't want to go (I told him I wanted to sleep and that I have no confidence in Reeves movies after those horrible Matrix sequels), but I didn't tell him that I really don't think it would be a spiritually healthy movie to watch, especially with Lent fast approaching.

I could be wrong but I don't think the movie touches on St. Constantine the Great. It is about a guy named John Constantine who dies and goes to hell and comes back and, of course, fights crime. It is based on a comic book called Hellstalker or Hellslayer or something like that. It probably won't be any worse than Hellboy or Hellraiser or any other Hell- movie. Which isn't to say that's good, just not slanderous of any of our saints.

Check. I looked into it too. It doesn't touch on Orthodoxy or our saints. It does give us an anti-hero, though, who can be arguably seen as a Christ-figure. And it deals with such traditional horror elements as demon possession, etc.

J.C. is the guy who does the exorcisms, although not in the name of Christ, but in his own power.

But making a man named Constantine be a hero over evil is sure going to put a lot of thougts into the minds of the public.

Especially when they find out ''hey, there was a man named Constantine and he was a hero for good".

Supposedly anyway.

I saw it today. I don't know why I get suckered into movies like this and Exorcist: The Beginning. I always think that MAYBE just maybe they'll have a bit of theological significance that I can enjoy.

Once again, though, I spent 6 bucks to sit through something that completely misrepresents Catholicism, the nature of God, and the role of Jesus.

SAVE YOUR MONEY. It's a piece of garbage. Part of the plot involved Gabriel becoming evil and ushering in the reign of the anti-christ. It was nothing less than an utter insult to such a glorious and righteous archangel. I actually apologized to Gabriel as I came out of the theater. I don't know if it's even permitted to apologize to angels, but I felt that I had insulted him just by viewing it.

I saw Constantine. It is mostly a movie for secular viewers. Although most of it deals with Heaven and Hell I don't find it very religious. It's mostly about a guy who wants to go to Heaven by earning his way in (killing demons). The only thing I found strange was the use of "half breeds" in the world. Half demon/human and half angel/human. The one angel/human in the movie Gabriel (who looks womanly, although I think meant to look genderless) is shown as a sinner, which I found odd, but it made for a great story. The only thing I didn't like was the fact that the movie made it seem like sacrifice and good deeds got you into Heaven. Oh well, that's the secular view anyhow.

Basically, I'd go see it if I was into special effects and didn't know much about Christianity.

Saw the movie tonight and I was dissappointed. I was really hoping for something that was a cross between the Matrix and the Excorcist, but that's not what it was. The use of half-breeds, which I was surprised they never called Nephilim, were the agents who tried to persuade men to sin or not to sin. Angels and Demons were supposed to be in some truce, while God and Satan made a wager for men's souls. Again, dissapointing!!
