I will repeat what I wrote in the other thread on this just in case it gets a different response here:

Does anyone else have the feeling that we're exchanging criminals for hostages more often than not?

Not saying this exchange is wrong to do. (Its the right thing to do, imo). But you have to wonder why Americans aside from diplomats and staff are in Russia at all at this point.

Well yeah I know what people had in mind to do there.

I'm just wondering why they stay or are allowed to stay as we've seen other Americans there taken hostage again and again. I guess USA cant restrict its citizens from free travel anywhere. But still.....

I agree...

If we're going to give some spy or war criminal back to Russia for example, we should get back 5 regular citizens, a couple of marines, and an "IOU 2 hostages."

But I get the sense Russia doesnt care quite as much about recovering their assets as we do about recovering our citizens. So it would probly go nowhere.

USA had some severe restrictions on going to Cuba for a long time. It is more relaxed now but shows it can be possible to have restrictions that included jail time. Some nations that restrict their citizens exiting for all kinds of reasons. I have seen where a nation literally takes a person off a plane to prevent them from leaving the country. Others might allow one to leave but you can only take at most a few hundred dollars.
