  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

This is a photo of the conglomerate rock by the river. They exposed it when they were working on the highway and building the bridge, so I photographed it. This rock is in a layer that is under the muck that was left behind when the glaciers melted around 12,000 years ago. Can anyone tell me anything about it?

If you could slice it, my wife would like it for a countertop. Let me know.

Not sure what do you want to know. But glaciation should not have much to do with it.
It was a deposit of a shallow river.

Conglomerate is usually lithified river sediment, sand and gravel, pebbles and cobbles. It can also result from retreating glaciers that drop silt and pebbles as the glaciers melt back and the strata are later compacted.

The glaciers did push a lot of rock in front of them, even from thousands of miles away. I never considered that the small fragments that make up the conglomerate could contain rock samples from far away places.

They are pretty rounded quartz pebbles. I guess the source might be at least 1000 miles away.
Again, no sign for a glacial origin.

It would help if we knew more about the location of this rocky formation.

She wants quartz countertops? Sounds expensive, but I am sure we could get some for you. Quartz generally runs from about $65-$100 per square foot installed. If you wanted granite we could maybe work out a deal for you at around $35 per square foot.

And this thread has what to do, with creation or evolution?
The geology we are talking about has to do with the end of the last ice age around 12975 years ago. There was a mass extinction at the time which are usually followed by a radiation or a population explosion. The layer we are talking about is actually pretty deep down. About 12 feet from the surface. It was exposed when they were building the bridge here. At the time I did talk to one of the hard hats with a tie at the job site. He did actually know quite a bit about it. I can walk onto a job site like this and pretend like I belong there and no one ever says anything to me about it.

That's a good price for granite. Locally, quartz is mixed with resin and formed into sheets
and so is permanently sealed so doesn't need regular re-sealing like granite. Then the costs
are about the same.

The composite should be cheaper, a lot easier to work with and a lot stronger. I use to do that with knife handles as a hobby. I would crush turquoise and mix it with epoxy and form a new handle if the old one was broken. They are real good at making composite materials in China. You can buy a knife with a turquoise handle now for a lot less money then what turquoise and mother of pearl use to cost. I was designing and selling kitchens around 30 years ago before the granite tops became popular. Back then they got into all kinds of exotic woods, but now the natural stone counter tops are getting to be real popular.
