Over the years, I've been a big fan of metal and I've been ejoying that type of music for close to 10 years at this point.

On one hand, I consider myself to be a Christian.

On the other, I spend a lot of my time listening to music, which includes bands like Cradle of Filth, Sargeist, Hecate Enthroned and so on.

Is anybody here in the same boat? I have a strange affinity / attraction to that sorta stuff and though I don't embrace the meaning of the lyrics I just find it enjoyable on a musical level. I don't really know what to think of this yet.

Hi, for a time I really liked ac/dc, even tho the words or meaning was really awful. Especially as it puts down women, in the back in black album.

I still liked the music itself though, but eventually couldn't handle the denigration of women, and the rest of garbage lyrics and so stopped listening to them.

If you can handle it, if the lyrics don't trouble you, then I wouldn't worry about it.

I would just suggest if gets to the point where the lyrics do trouble you, then you might want to move on to another - different group.. But of course all up to you and how you feel.

Often times, songs which can be totally trash, may not be offensive to the one listening to it, as they don't hear it as lyrically trash where others might.

Not to worry when comes to how and what others do, as is between you and God, as to what you feel is okay and no okay for you.

A month ago, I turned on pink floyd, and another singer, certain songs I love, and couldn't handle the meaning of the songs, though I hadn't listened to them in a long time.

Pink Floyd always brings me right back to stoner/party days. Wish it wouldn't but it does. And for me, is not a safe place to be in.

Every person is affected differently by different things.

When I say brings me back to stone/party days, is like being high, and wanting to be high, and due to my life prior to Jesus, is not a good place or safe place for me to be at.

I avoid anything which brings me to a not good place.

I try to avoid things which conflict with what Jesus gives us, though I will listen to songs which have the craziest stories, not so great ones, and not have a problem with it.

I imagine is because those songs weren't part of my past, not that all songs from past are bad at all, but meaning specific triggering songs, which trigger a place in me I don't desire to be at.

I hear you about enjoying on musical level. Is so very much music that is awesome, with not the greatest lyrics.

So, would just advise if troubles you, then move to another band.

And remember that every person being different; some would have great struggles over something, where another does not.

Read Romans 14, the chapter. It gives an overview, an overall help in seeing if is okay for you, not a problem, but if causes brother to stumble, don't do it.

If applied to music, if have someone around who is troubled by something you listen to or do, then is best for loving that person; as we are called to love others, to just not do or not listen to the music if that person can not handle it, or if it troubles him.

So while around that person then don't do whatever it is which troubles his conscience, even tho doesn't bother yours.

He is not to judge you, but we can not do much about what other Christians in fact do very often.

Don't let other's judge you friend; they may speak the words, but simply always go to God with such, which keeps satan from getting a foothold.

The Holy Spirit will guide you and your conscience as well.

blessings,
tapero

I was in the very same boat. Still am sort of. About 400 cd's of metal, rock and rap.

I felt the same way about the lyrics. I figured I don't have to pay attention to them or like them to enjoy the music. But now I see it differently. Slowly the conviction came upon me that some of this stuff was just awful. So I broke all my albums that glorified satan or put down God directly. Stuff like Cradle of Filth, Deicide, Cannibal Corpse, Mercyful fate etc. How can I, as a Christian, listen to and enjoy lmusic that glorifies my enemy and ridicules my Lord? I cannot do it.

But it has gone even further. I can no longer even listen to music for long that glorifies sex, violence, drugs, alcohol abuse or other sins. Let's face the truth here, God HATES this stuff. It is abhorrent to Him. How can we call Him Lord and listen to the glorification of sin?

It is a hard thing to stop listening. Trust me, I know. I basically raised myself with this music. I absolutely loved it for almost 20 years. It was such an integral part of who I was. But it simply does not fit with my life in Christ. I still have most of the CD's but rarely play them. I still occasionally listen to them. I am not perfect and God is working on my in this. But I truly believe that if the lyrics are sinful, then so is listening to the song for pleasure.

And this is not a Romans 14 issue at all. Romans 14 addresses issues that are morally neutral. These issues can be considered to be bad, but are not inherintly bad. That would be a great argument for metal music in general. As a genre it is not bad. There is in fact God glorifying metal. But this argument would come into play if your brother was caused to stumble by you listening to metal that was neutral or even glorifying to God. But for specific songs and bands, that arguments fails. The sad truth is so many of them are not morally neutral, but actually vile and evil. That cannot be excused by Paul's reasoning in Romans 14. No actually sinful behaviour can.

I would suggest finding new music that does glorify God. There is a lot of good Christian music out there in many genres including death metal.

While I don't listen to the type of music you are discussing, there are some Christian bands that embrace this style of music. Have you taken a look at some of the options there? I'd have to look to find a couple names, but I know they are out there. Perhaps there is someone here who listens to your style of music that is by Christian artists.

Listen to some Christian bands who have this style. Also, if you are feeling conflicted about this style of music, I would encourage you to check out the Christian Rock Apologetics. Just do a quick search on Google for it.

You may want to consider if God is putting this on your mind for a reason? I think since you've made this post, its something you may already know you need to work on. I try to us that inner nudge as a guidance to consider if what I'm doing is ok or now. I know I use to love hard rock and still do, but now I'm just selective about the songs I listen to. I recall I use to really love the song Man in a Box by Alice In Chains until the day God brought an awareness to me to really listen to the words and when I heard the line "Jesus christ, deny your maker" I knew it was a song that I shouldn't be listening to. So just maybe do a search online of the lyrics to the songs you listen to and see if there's anything in them that conflicts with your faith.

Thanks everyone for your support.

I know that God has put this on my mind for a reason.
The reason I have so much trouble with this is that dark poetry, music and expression is one of my gifts - I have sort of this knack for writing unique and creative material but it's hard to know if that inspiration is God-given or from some other source.

This is sort of one of those things that I will have to deal with in small doses. I'm able to not feel guilt while listening but I feel like I should maybe feel guilty, especially with the current black-metal view on Christianity. I certainly don't fit the labels on the matter which is good though.

Tool has helped me with this, especially with the lyrics of "Parabol" and "Parabola" to some extent.
