In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Hello everyone.

I have some questions about Confirmation. I'm hoping that perhaps a Catholic priest can answer them, but any help would be greatly appreciated.

First, you'll need some background. I was not raised in any church. I had a calling to attend church when I was 8 years old, so I started attended by myself. Being that I was only 8, I had to attend the nearest church which was a Methodist one at the end of our street. Eventually, I was baptised in the Methodist church.

Later in life, I began to attend a Catholic school (because of the better academics). Consequently, I started attending the Catholic church & felt very drawn to it. I eventually received my Holy Catholic Communion.

Sadly, the clergy of the given school were not very understanding (or tolerant) of my lack of knowledge regarding their church. Eventually, I was turned off to the Catholic church because of these things. When it came time for my Confirmation I backed out, telling my grandmother (who is Catholic) that I couldn't stand in the church & lie to Gods' face.

I closed myself off to God & Jesus after that, thinking myself abandoned by them (because of many personal traumatic trials that I went through). Well, 13 years later, here I am. I re-opened the lines of communication & was immediately graced with His presence & unconditional love. There has been no turning back since then. :crossrc: I have now started attending a Catholic church again. And have met an absolutely wonderful priest in the process, that has taught me that all Catholics are not as bad as the ones from my previous experiences. :amen:

Well, that took longer than I thought it would. LOL! Now, onto my questions. I now have a VERY strong desire to go through with my abandoned Confirmation. I am now ready to do it. I am wondering if my being baptised Methodist will have any bearing on me being confirmed Catholic. I had read somewhere that this did not matter anymore & wanted to be sure.

Also, do I have to take any classes before I am able to do the Confirmation? If so, what kinds? And finally, what does the actual Confirmation entail? Does it have to be done during Sunday Mass or can it be done privately? (My baptism was done privately, so I was just curious.)

I thank anyone who was able to read through all of that ;) & is willing to answer some of my questions. Any information will be greatly appreciated.

Sincerely,
Laurasia

I was baptized as a Methodist, it is just as good :)
The only issue is if you don't have any proof of it, or it was done by a group that doesn't believe in the Trinity.

You should talk to your priest!! As long as you were baptised "In the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and the Holy SPirit"- and either sprinkled or immersed in water- your baptism is fine- and you have been baptised into the CAtholic Church already....

usually someone who wants to be COnfirmed as an adult will have to take RCIA classes- but that can be at the discretion of the pastor- who may instead provide private instruction in exceptional cases.

Many of the wonderful folks here have gone through the RCIA process and felt it was of value to instruct them more deeply in their faith.

Many prayers coming your way! Welcome home!!

Oh! Cofirmation typically involves taking classes (RCIA) or making arrangements with your parish on how you can learn about the Church, so they know you are ready and can confirm you. Exceptions can be made if there is reason to believe such education isn't need.

You'll have to find a parish and talk with them about the specifics on RCIA or if you even need it.

BTW- Welcome home!

Holy cow StrayBullet & Shannon! That was the fastest response I've ever received. LOL!

Thank you for all of the help. Yes, I have the papers from when I was baptised, so that shouldn't be a problem. ;)

RCIA classes, huh? I've never heard of them. I definately plan on speaking with my priest about all of this. I was just hoping to maybe get some answers here, since I can't call him right now.

Well, thank you again for all of the help you two. It is definately appreciated. And it's good to be home. :amen:

Sincerely,
Laurasia

Thanking you for sharing that, it's a great testimony to the Grace of God. You wouldn't have been able to receive your first communion if your baptism wasn't accepted so you are fine. You will want to contact the parish that did your first communion and have them verify the date in their records so you can provide that to your current parish. If the priest isn't readily available to you or you are in anyway intimidated in calling for an appointment you might start out with the Director of Religious Education or check your bulletin for the RCIA director who will start you on your journey. You'll eventually connect one on one with the Priest, I assure you.

I would recommend that you do an RCIA program just to ensure your knowledge. They may have you do a modified program depending on the diocese method but either way you'll learn a lot and meet some of the people in the parish. Typically the confirmation is public at Easter. It allows the entire Church body to rejoice in God's work locally and you to be received by the Church; however you might convince a priest to do it privately but it will lose some of it's grandeur. Realize that Catholics are big on the communion of the saints and your confirmation brings you fully into this place. It's really cool!

I'll pray for your continued journey!:crossrc:

RCIA is basically where you met with other adults one night a week, there they discuss the topics need to prepare you for entry into the Catholic Church, also to answer any questions that may come up.

If for some reason you can't attend, many parishes will try to find a way to work with you.

Well, thank you again for all of the help you two. It is definately appreciated. And it's good to be home. :amen:

No problem. I was raised outside the Church. I look forward to reconciliation within weeks perhaps and then confirmation and communion in Easter :)

Thank you again everyone for all of your help. :D

Maggie...Thank you for all of that information. I don't mind having my Confirmation in front of the parish, I was just curious. Hopefully something can be worked out regarding RCIA classes though. My transportation situation is pretty tricky. ;)

I will definately be calling my priest tomorrow to discuss all of this though. Thank you again, everyone, for your help & kindness regarding all of this.

Sincerely,
Laurasia

I have wonderful news everyone. I will be beginning RCIA classes next month. My priest gave me the books that we will be using at Mass this morning.

Also, the transportation problem has been fixed & that is because of my other good news...My best-friend (who I share a vehicle with) has decided to take the classes with me! I have been praying for this very thing because she is not even baptised. :crossrc: She so desperately wants to be baptised, but she has very high anxiety & is terrified to be baptised in front of the entire congregation at Mass. She spoke with our priest this morning though & he convinced her to come with me to classes. He assured her that by the time she was ready to be baptised, she would be much more comfortable with everyone/everything & would be able to do it.

She is positively terrified about it right now, but I'm helping her. I explained to her that the RCIA group is fairly large this year (according to our priest) & that when she does get baptised, she most likely will not be alone anyway. Then I also told her that she could be getting Confirmed like me & have to do it in front of everyone at Easter Mass! LOL!

Sincerely,
Laurasia
