  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Hello all...

My 3rd child  is about to receive Confirmation in a few weeks. (2 older ones have already received Confirmation)

I have been told that none of the children receiving Confirmation are permitted to choose a Confirmation name.  Has anyone heard about a change in Church doctrine to prohibit the selection and use of a Confirmation name?  (Is this a local parish/diocese thing?)

confirmation is a delayed part of baptism, thus you can apply the following doctrine to it:
2156 The sacrament of Baptism is conferred "in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit." <Mt 28:19> In Baptism, the Lord's name sanctifies man, and the Christian receives his name in the Church. This can be the name of a saint, that is, of a disciple who has lived a life of exemplary fidelity to the Lord. The patron saint provides a model of charity; we are assured of his intercession. The "baptismal name" can also express a Christian mystery or Christian virtue. "Parents, sponsors and the pastor are to see that a name is not given which is foreign to Christian sentiment."
(quote from the Catechism of the Catholic Church)

I would run that by them and ask them why they suggest a person not take a saints name.

Sounds like more liberal post-Vatican II local-parish hogwash to me.

In all the parishes I have been affiliated with, kids choose saint's names, as do adult converts.

"Ubi Charitas , et Amor, DEUS TIBI EST!!! " Lets be charitable here and not rush into judgement.

I think the place to find the answer is right in the Bishops office!!! Remember that Bishops Conferences can have and do have in cases as stated in Cannon Law discretion on how to use lithurgy ( of course guided by the clear and unequivocal teachings of the Magisterium). Where I converted and got confirmed, the idea of adding a name was not used and believe me you coulnd accuse the Bishop and his Coadjutor of being liberal). I asked and I told them of my wishes and of the name I wanted and why I wanted it and I was allowed the name. So in my parish records there is the notation that upon confirmation I added the name Alberto ( in honor of St Albertus Magnus) to my names Jose Antonio...So I am Jose Antonio Alberto ( BTW I changed my birth certificate so the name is also my legal name)

I am 22 and was just baptised/confirmed/first Eucharist at the Easter Vigil this year. And we only chose one name. A lot of churches are switching to doing the three initial Sacraments together at birth, like the Eastern Churches do (or at least the Byzantine Church does..) and therefore, only one Saint's name is chosen, not two. So children that still need to be confirmed because they were baptised before things went back to the way the early church did them are only receiving one third of the initial Sacraments.. and they already should have their Saint's name. That might be why they are not allowing them to choose one that will be written the book of the elect. Because they should already have it. Its all about returning to the foundation of the apostolic church beginnings :)

Dearest Sister in Christ:

When did the Roman Catholic Church start allowing infants to receive all three sacraments of initiation. Out here in the west, I'm sure that the Cardinal is not allowing this, as the only people who can receive all three sacraments are converts in the RCIA program. Perhaps I am wrong. If this is the case, and all dioceses are allowing the three sacraments to be conferred on infants, it's really good news.

From what I understand, its only been in the past few years. And then its on a diocese by diocese basis, and then, if the diocese if for it, its parish by parish. But I was always given the impression that we were in one of the more progressive archdiocese (D. of Scranton, AD of Philadelphia). In our parish though, The children that are born now can receive all three if the parents want them to have it. At least with Fr. Harris there it was. I dont know what this new guy will do. Driving the 10hours round trip to day to check him out, lol ;o)

Hmmm, I believe that Eucharist at birth is not in accord with the Code of Canon Law for the Latin Rite.

LOL no one can receive the Eucharist at birth.

Our babies are usually baptized 40 days after BIRTH, then they are chrismated and receive their first Holy Communion.

Dearest faithful Dominican:

Christ is glorified in His Saints! May He also be glorified in us!

Our God is a God of humor - He created us and giraffes!

I knew that was an oversight. Couldn't let that one slip by, it might confuse our dear protestant brethren who already are very confused by all of our doctrines.

Yours in Christ,
Elizabeth
