  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

The following are some verses that some denominations use to justify the practice of confessing their sin to a priest. How would the other side explain these verses?

[BIBLE]John 20:23[/BIBLE]

[BIBLE]Matthew 18:18[/BIBLE]

These verses have nothing to do with confessing to a priest specifically. So I can't see how they are used for that purpose though I am sure they have their methogs. We are indeed meant to confess our sins but I don't think there is any Biblical ground behind those sins having to be confessed to a priest.
Confession does two things.
1. It admits that there is a problem. God is waiting for us to do this. Christ said " it is not the healthy who need a doctor but the sick". God is willing to help those who know they are sick (and sometimes those who don't/won't admit that they are sick). In admiting we have a problem we are admitting that we are not capable to solving that problem on our own.
2. When confessing to another we create a network. There is now more than 1 person praying in agreement for help and guidance on this issue - God is right there with them.
So yes confess yours sins.
To a priest - not necessarily.

If you are a Christian, then you are a priest or priestess... that's what we are.

1Pe 2:9But ye [are] a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light:
&

Jam 5:16 Confess [your] faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.

1Jo 1:9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us [our] sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

And although I do not wish to offend any Catholic brothers or sisters on the site:

Mat 23:9 And call no [man] your father upon the earth: for one is your Father, which is in heaven.

You're ok li'l sis, just keep reading God's Word and ask Him to assist you in understanding things... let me give you this... www.blueletterbible.org
