  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

 I figured that we were required to go every week! I haven't been able to go yet so I haven't been able to ask a priest about it.
We should go every week however :
We are required to go at least once a year.
We are required to confess all Mortal Sins through the sacrement of peance.
When we do go to peance we are to confess all Sins both Mortal and Venial at that time.
We are required to not receive communion in the state of Mortal Sin.

Communion rids one of the stain of Venial sins but it is still suggested that we also use the sacrement of peance for this also.

Part 2, Section 2, Chapter 1, Article 3, SubSection 6, Heading 2

1394 As bodily nourishment restores lost strength, so the Eucharist strengthens our charity, which tends to be weakened in daily life; and this living charity wipes away venial sins. 231 By giving himself to us Christ revives our love and enables us to break our disordered attachments to creatures and root ourselves in him:

Since Christ died for us out of love, when we celebrate the memorial of his death at the moment of sacrifice we ask that love may be granted to us by the coming of the Holy Spirit. We humbly pray that in the strength of this love by which Christ willed to die for us, we, by receiving the gift of the Holy Spirit, may be able to consider the world as crucified for us, and to be ourselves as crucified to the world.... Having received the gift of love, let us die to sin and live for God. 232

Part 2, Section 2, Chapter 1, Article 3, SubSection 7, Heading 1

1416 Communion with the Body and Blood of Christ increases the communicant's union with the Lord, forgives his venial sins, and preserves him from grave sins. Since receiving this sacrament strengthens the bonds of charity between the communicant and Christ, it also reinforces the unity of the Church as the Mystical Body of Christ.
Part 2, Section 2, Chapter 2, Article 4, SubSection 7, Heading 2

1458 Without being strictly necessary, confession of everyday faults (venial sins) is nevertheless strongly recommended by the Church. 59 Indeed the regular confession of our venial sins helps us form our conscience, fight against evil tendencies, let ourselves be healed by Christ and progress in the life of the Spirit. By receiving more frequently through this sacrament the gift of the Father's mercy, we are spurred to be merciful as he is merciful: 60

Whoever confesses his sins . . . is already working with God. God indicts your sins; if you also indict them, you are joined with God. Man and sinner are, so to speak, two realities: when you hear "man" - this is what God has made; when you hear "sinner" - this is what man himself has made. Destroy what you have made, so that God may save what he has made .... When you begin to abhor what you have made, it is then that your good works are beginning, since you are accusing yourself of your evil works. The beginning of good works is the confession of evil works. You do the truth and come to the light. 61

I must confess to you all that I have NEVER gone to confession. I am a convert and was baptized and confirmed over 13 years ago. I am a sinner like everyone else but have never been. When I converted there was no one alse to go throught the experience with me, so I just met with our priest 5 or 6 times and that was it. I would have no idea what to do or what to say (and I have a very good relationship with our priest!).

I would love to be educated about confession, and I feel sure this is the group that can do it.

Hi Julie,

In my area churches usually have Confession available on Saturday afternoons/evenings. However, I am sure that if you call your parish priest you could schedule a confession with him for any time. When you go to Confession, you can kneel behind the screen (for anonymity) or sit in front of the priest, face to face. I usually opt for the face to face although it took me a while to build up the courage. But I think we should be humbled by Confession - after all - our sins are out of pride . Anyway, the priest will say something about the Sacrament, then you can just pour your heart out in repentance. When you are done, you say the Act of Contrition (if you do not know it by heart the priest will guide you through it) and then you can be absolved. And the feeling coming out of a confessional, with a clean soul - is wonderful!

There really aren't words to describe this. It is amazing what our Lord does with the smallest effort on our part. I mean really, just think about it. We go in with all of our garbage, and He is there just waiting for us. We approach Him over and over again, and every single time He's there. Absolution is what He grants, the loving response of a good Father to His wayward child.
