Lot's of things to be discussed and debated here. But this I know for sure - in Matthew ch. 5, Jesus says if you come to the altar with your gift and remember someone has something against you, first go make things right with that person, then come back to offer your gift.
The first person you need to confess to is the offended party, and that is much harder than talking to a stranger in a confessional.
Thru historical study, I do not believe Apostolic succession is possible due to rampant Simony, nor was it originally about transferring authority or power - it was about tracing proper teaching.
