I haven't seen it, but from the reviews I've read, most of it is overblown hogwash. The plot was obviously written by Hollywood screenwriters who know just enough about the Catholic Church to be dangerous, but not enough to be anywhere near accurate. They lean heavy on the "secret conspiracy" shtick, along with supposed ambition, rivalry, and desire for power amongst the attendees, many of which, if the way their characters are portrayed, never would have made it into the priesthood to begin with, let alone the College of Cardinals.

Plus, there are some aspects that are just plain ludicrous. Supposedly, an archbishop shows up, claiming that the late pope had made him a cardinal, although there is no record of it. Riiight. And to top it off, this archbishop is the archbishop of-----Kabul, Afghanistan. Really? Kabul, Afghanistan? Am I expected to believe that one of the most violently Islamic countries on the surface of the planet is going to permit any Christian organization to grow inside its borders to the size of an archdiocese??? Come on! The writers of this movie evidently think we all fell off a pickle boat the day before yesterday.

There is a virtual rogue's gallery of nasty, dirty secrets among all the members of the group gathered for the conclave, everything from the leader of the election breaking Church rules to gather information on his rivals, a nun who reveals that she had a child with one of the cardinals years before, blackmail, bribery, suicide bombings, wholesale abandonment of the Deposit of the Faith, and the ultimate nonsense, the cardinal who finally gets elected is an androgynous transgender who is neither male nor female.

All in all, I wouldn't recommend it. I certainly wouldn't watch it, and I wouldn't advise any Catholic who cares about their faith to watch it, either---I would place doing so to be a near occasion of sin at the very least.

Is the movie Conclave good or is it anti Catholic?
From what I heard, it's about electing a female Pope/Pope "Joan" nonsense.

I suggest you avoid it.

Blessings

We are advised to avoid it from several clergy. And yes, it’s anti-Catholic.
Ah, yes. That reminds me of something...

Not to go off topic, I won't go into details how this conversation came about, but one of the Benedictine priests I went to confession in college suggest I watch Brokeback Mountain.

Spoiler: I did. Dumb movie.

I watched that because an AOL message board I used to be on had people raving about it. They were really liberal and I dont think I was a practicing Catholic then. i remember watching the initial gay encounter and was disgusted. It was either a rape or close to it.

I don't remember it being rape, but it's been close to 10 years since I've seen it. I will not comment further. I remember feeling disgusted after it ended because of how the characters were portrayed. ugh

Didn't understand why it was so popular.

Probably because that’s about the time it was starting to be ”cool” to be gay, trans etc.
Many of the women I was posting with were liberal.

I didn't even bother to try seeing it.....I know I would have been repulsed by it, so I stayed away. Maybe it's a personal failing of mine, but depictions of homosexual activity, even if it's simple kissing or embracing, cause me to absolutely shudder with disgust. It's unnatural and repulsive, and I cannot watch it. You see more of it these days in TV commercials and such, and I always turn away from it when it comes up.

That's fine. I would say 99.999% of straight men would react the same way.

I’m so old that I remember when it was a big no no for a married couple to sleep in the same bed on tv and now we have men canoodling with other men in commercials.
