ok, i bought two speakers, very basic ones....i've had them for a couple years and they're ok, except if i wanna turn them up, the sound gets "trembly"...not sure else how to describe it and they only go so loud....i'm wondering if there are better speakers that would play louder and clear-er.

Ok, the thing do is to get speakers that must be plugged into wall power, so they can amplify the sound. The next consideration is quality v price. Also, sometimes sound can be enhanced a whole lot in Control Panel / ~high-def audio~. This is especially true of most RealTech audio drivers.

Amazingly enough considering the fact that my computer is from one of the first few generations of eMachines models, is that it came with a nice 2.1 (that is, two speakers and a subwoofer) system. It may have been an option that my grandfather just went with when he bought it back in 2001.

'Trembly' doesn't really say anything about what it actually sounds like. If the sound is clipping (that's the technical term, yes; it sounds like the audio getting blown back with distorted static because the waveform exceeds its boundaries) when you turn the volume up, it's probably because the settings in the Volume Manager are turned up too high, not that it's a problem with the speakers themselves. That, and of course that many computer speakers sold as a package with desktops aren't very good and are overly tinny.

In the Volume Manager, there's a lot of different volume controls, but the ones that matter here are the ones marked 'Master Volume' and 'Wave' (or it might be called 'PCM', which is actually the correct term). Never turn both up to 100%. If you turn one up to 100% (usually Wave/PCM), then turn the other (Master) down to 40% or so.

You can also do what I do.... I have a bookshelf stereo system with an audio input and just connect my computer to it and switch between the inputs. If you want a pretty good sounding computer sound system one that has a decent powered subwoofer will give you better sound.

You can also hook up existing stereo equipment to your PC, assuming the receiver can plug into the audio jacks on the PC. Just keep the speakers away from your case, as they are not magnetically shielded, and thus can wear your hard drive out.

The speakers would need to be close (less than 12 inches) from the hard drive to have any significant effect. I've had mine within 4 inches and never had a problem.
