  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Your first problem, in my opinion, is Windows XP.  It is considered windows for dummies and lets you change or fix nothing unless you know what you are doing.  Your second problem may be a virus.  I unfortunately am stuck with XP until I get enough money to by Windows 2000.  i have recently been attacked by some virus' and it causes my computer to shut down.  The only thing good about XP is that it runs off of NT techonology (That means that XP is a very stable program and shouldn't shut down on you like that)

If i am wrong here, someone please tell me.

can someone tell me what is going on with my hp pavilion 532w windows xp, yesterday while I was in the middle of something it shut down by its self and restarted two different times? I am a new computer user and know next to nothing , I own the idiots guide to windows xp!

Can I ask you what were you doing?

XP doesn't usually shut itself down like that unless you did something very wrong with it!

XP has it's goods and bads - and IMO - it's goods far out-weigh it's bads.

XP is an ok operating system, really.

Win2k perhaps is better. Faster, anyways.

As to restarting - it could be software, but it could also be your computer cpu overheating (or somethingl ike that). Mine's done that a lot before.

My computer at work with Win98 has done that a couple times in the last few years. And it's always when I'm in the midst of updating something that of course I haven't saved after making several additions/edits/changes. ;)

My parent's computer at home used to put itself into "standby" mode which wasn't really standby mode...it was more "I'm a yellow light instead of a green one on the power button. Now you have to unplug me until my light goes away, then plug me back in, and restart me." And that was because the internal fan busted.

Yeah that has nothing to do with your operating system. You seem to be having some sort of power problem. Chances are your power supply is not operating as it should. Sometimes they will do that before they fail. If you don’t have your computer plugged into a surge protector than I recommend trying that first. If you do have one and it is or is still failing than I recommend having it serviced by a trained professional.

Peace

It has nothing to do with Windows XP. XP is great, so is 2000 Pro.

Anyways, make sure all your cable connections are secure inside, clean out dust, etc. It's most likley due to heat, make sure it has good ventalation. It could also be a problem with your power supply. How long have you had it?

Ooh! I think I've had this same problem. Something on your system failed.

I found these instructions on the web. I modified them to make them a bit more specific and easy to read:

1.) Click Start Button
2.) Go to Settings > Control Panel
3.) Click on the System icon
4.) Click the Advanced tab
5.) Under "Startup and Recovery," click the "Settings" button
6.) Under System Failure
-Make sure "Write an event to the system log" is CHECKED and
-make sure "Automatically restart" is UN-CHECKED
7.) Click "Okay" and reboot.

I am 99% sure that will fix your problem.

if XP shuts down unexpectedly, it will produce one of two files.. either the memory.dmp (BSOD) or the user.dmp (AV).

the BSOD is the old blue screen of death where the machine starts writing information to the screen and you'll see lots of random stuff. if that is happening, note the PID of the failing process (which will be listed on the screen) and send the software vendor the memory.dmp file.

if you are AV (access violating) it will produce the user.dmp (Dr. Watson). you can review the drwtsn32.log file for more information about which software access violated. once you know which one it is, you can take steps to correct it.

there is, however, a known bug with XP which will cause it to shut down unexpectedly. you should ensure that you have the latest service packs applied for your operating system.
