Does anyone remember this 1988 movie starring Tom Hanks about a boy who magically becomes grown up overnight. In one scene he applies for and acquires a job as a "computer operator" at a toy company. (The joke in the movie was that kids know a lot about computers.)
My question is, what exactly was his job? The boss just shows him to his new desk, and he immediately starts working. So unrealistic. It looks as if he is entering information from paper sources into a computer, which looks like a mainframe terminal. His coworker (Jon Lovitz) tells him to "slow down" 20 seconds into his job, so as not to make the other employees look bad in comparison.
It sounds like a data entry job, but that's different from a computer operator, who would have worked in a data center rather than an office.
Also, what was his salary? He yells (in excitement) when he gets his first paycheck: "A hundred and eighty-seven dollars!" His coworker (Jon Lovitz) thinks he's complaining that it's too LOW, and says something to show he agrees. But in reality, doesn't it seem low? Assuming that it's for one week at 40 hours, that's only 4 dollars plus per hour.
