  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I'm hoping that someone who knows a little bit about computers can tell me if this is something simple that can be fixed at low cost, or if I would be better off just buying a new monitor:

A couple of days ago, I shut off my computer for the night. It had been working fine. The next day, I went and started the computer, and it booted up, I got the startup music from the speakers, the little "on" light flashed on on the monitor and then it flashed back off. The monitor never lit up. I have tried unplugging the monitor and plugging it back in, and the "on" light comes on and goes back off (I can even hear the monitor starting to come on). I've never had any problems with it before.

The only thing I can think of is there was a thunderstorm the night before this happened, BUT the monitor was plugged into the same surge protector as the computer and the computer seems to be fine.

:help:

Thanks in advance for any advice or help!

J

Sure it would. Actually, a PC can "power up" without actually powering up as well :) That also would keep your monitor from turning on. They can do all kinds of stupid things. That's why I make the money fixing them, because they cause most people to pull their hair out. lol :p

After some trial and error, it turns out that I just needed a new power cord for the monitor. Thanks for everyone's help!
Lightening could have caused a short in the cord....if you had thunderstorms the night before your monitor quit working I would suggest getting another surge protector......I had a computer fried from lightening on my surge protector, but it didn't touch the monitor or anything else plugged into it......

just dont, dont ever, open up a monitor unless you have been trained how to by a professional and you absolutely need too. CRT monitors are so cheap nowadays that its not worth your life to open up a monitor and attempt to fix it.
This makes me think of the "Don't, Don't ever shake a baby" saying, lol :)
