I only give compliments I really mean. I used to have trouble just saying thank you to a compliment but I think it is easier now. I get compliments from my clients at work a lot and I just say thanks. I actually believe the compliments I get from clients. My Mom used to have this friend that would give compliments on things that were obviously NOT true... like, one day I went to work out with them and I had not showered and my hair was nasty so I just threw it up in a ponytail and she was like "ohhh I love your haaaaaiiirr, it is so pretty up like that" -- it was nasty, trust me. If I had nasty hair at work, I would hear about it, lol, because the clients are truthful about the negative, too (I can hear it now, "You need to comb your hair!")

The same is true when you work with kids, too. I used to work with kids and they have no censor, hehe. If something is bad you're going to know about it. If something is good, you'll know about it. But kids at some point learn to give compliments to suck up to you, as well With that you can kind of tell if they are serious or not by looking at the situation.

I am terrible at accepting compliments. I never know whether the person is being sincere or not.

I'm getting better at giving compliments.

I don't really regard compliments, unless they come from people I trust to give me the truth. So, I typically disregard them after I say thank you. I believe in compliments, its just that people lie, or give half truths to others all the time. I see it on this forum aswell as other places.

they aren't real. people throw them around just to make themselves look good. nobody really means them.

I don't really get many compliments. I don't give out as many as I should as well. I think it's good to give out compliments.
Whether I believe the few compliments I get or not depends on how much the person giving them knows about the subject they're complimenting on.

They can be nice, but I mostly think they're polite social fictions. This isn't to say that nobody, including me, says any sincerely, but I think they mostly serve a social role in conversation. When I get them I try to be polite and say thanks even if I think they're insincere.

When I first started going to college, it almost scared me when people complimented me, because I didn't really know how to react. I still don't know what I quite think of compliments. I only compliment someone when it is really what I think. It really does depend on the person who compliments me, if it's a guy complimenting me, I don't like it very much. If it's someone I know, I'm okay with it.

I am sincere in the compliments I give, and I give others the benefit of the doubt that they are being sincere when I receive them as well.

I just say thank you and go on about my business, or if they compliment something specific (like a blouse) I will tell them where I got it.

Depending on who is saying it, I start wondering what they want now when I get complimented. I am not good about receiving compliments. I try to say thank you. I almost never really believe them, because I also have self-esteem issues. Even from my wife. I know she means them, but I still don't take them to heart.
