  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

Going to say why this is relevant? If not, I'll just [/derail].

I wanna see if SR can get it.

Remember -- we're only 24th on the list as far as science; and I think it's interesting that you guys across the pond have no idea what I'm talking about.

 -- I'm sure Split Rock knows!

Yeah...understanding of science - not knowledge of scientists.

Remember - you're the ones who laud something because of who said it, we're the ones who laud something because of what is actually said.

Just curious.
I was wondering if a person were shut into a room that was completely airtight, would he survive if there were enough plants growing there, to transform carbon dioxide into oxygen. (Assuming also there was enough water and food for both the person and the plants to survive, and he didn't go completely mad from being incarcerated) (Don't worry, I'm not thinking of attempting to conduct such an experiment even if I could!!)
Well, just thinking about it, I suppose it would be its own little ecosystem...however, given an average size man in say, a compartment 30ft by 30ft, how many plants would it take to keep the air breathable? Or would you need a much bigger room, or maybe it could be smaller?

The problem is that a biosphere is a much larger environment than just a plant and some creature. Small-scale biospheres can't work I think, or at least not very well.

Which makes one wonder what the minimum requirements are.

Thanks for that interesting and informative link  Though by the looks of it Idon't think the astronauts are probably breathing oxygen produced by plants!

Not right now, but if Anybody is looking into sustainable biospheres it's NASA ant the Likes.

Example the Mars Mission (If it ever happens) would need something along those lines.

Could anyone please answer my question a few posts up as to whether the universe is a closed system or not, Thanks
As far as I know we don't know, but we Think it is (If I'm correct)

There's three ways to look at it:

  1. The universe is a closed system and is running down toward thermal equilibrium.
  2. The universe is an open system and is receiving input from a hitherto unknown source.
  3. The universe is an open system and being sustained by God (Colossians 1:17) with a kind of "shekinah energy".

Yes, thanks..but I wondered if there was any scientific consensus.
Obviously you and I believe that God sustains what He has created by the power of His Word (if I remember the ref exactly). And obviously scientists, whether believers or not, will have different takes on the outworking of that.

I don't know if this helps any, but here's a thread I started some time ago: 1.

So have creationists come to a consensus on how Goddidit?

More to the point, has Christianity come to a consensus, or is it still fractured into tons of denominations?

Get the story straight, then come and bother us with the details.

The ones who take Him literally have.

It's still fractured into 'tons of denominations' [sic]; which shows this dispensation is still going on.

Ephesians 4:13 Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ:

Get the story straight, then come and bother us with the details.
You first -- and you can start with the story of how we got our moon.

We think that the universe is a closed system. However, I'm not sure if that's the case since it I don't think it has been shown to be the case.

Ah, so no-one's totally sure yet then...unless anyone here knows of any definite conclusions scientists have come to?

Scientists like answers that lead to more questions. They don't like definite answers. Which is good, because they haven't found all that many.

Except this isn't the case - you just refuse to acknowledge the differences of opinion within creationism because of your notion of the sin of "variance" (whatever that is).

Again, whenever you get the story straight, bother us with the details.

You first -- and you can start with the story of how we got our moon.

Wow...thanks for that link, fascinating...there are obviously a lot of potential variables to be taken into account. But I suppose, in theory, if all the difficulties could be ironed out, then it would be possible to survive, but it would take years of research I should think to provide the optimal environment.
Just goes to show how complex the balance of nature is and how little things can upset it.

This should give you confidence that your scientific mind is as sharp as those of top-notch scientists.

'Nature' as a whole is not fragile at all. In fact, it has gone through meteors, earthquakes, solar flares, ice ages, etc. It's us organisms living in it that are fragile. It's like tickling an elephant and a hundred fleas are shaken off it. Would the fleas be correct in assuming that their world is fragile because hundreds of their friends died when the elephant was tickled?

Earth and nature will be just fine as it has for billions of years. It's us we should be worried about.
