This is the third in a series of art challenges. The purpose is to get people practicing their art. You don't have to do them in order, they are just prompts.

For the third challenge submit a painting or drawing of an animal. See what you come up with! Multiple submissions are fine. This is not a contest, just a fun activity.

Edit: The goal is to encourage people to do art, but you can also post previous pieces if they fit the theme. That way we can see more art!
Here is a link to the other community art challenges:

I use Strathmore water color paper and several sets of watercolors. My fav is Windsor & Newton; the others are student sets that have a wider range of colors, but are not as high of a quality as W&N.

What kind of dog is that in your drawing?

We use W&N as well (more my family than me, I tend to do digital). We are considering using a honey based one such as M. Graham, as it tends to re-wet easier.

Which Strathmore?

We tend to use Arches as we find it holds up to water well.

As for the dog, that is my signature, but I guess it is an animal! It is a german short hair dog. We had one when I was growing up. I drew this (not our actual dog, just similar) some years later and sent it to my dad. When my dad died I received the picture back.

I just paint little postcard sized works. So it is Strathmore Watercolor Postcards. I like keeping my works small. I do them for therapy reasons, not so much to show them or sell them. (Although I used to sell my larger works. I do not do that any longer. I have only a few of them that I kept, so they are part of my permanent collection now).

So the painting I shared here above is a therapy painting. For me, it is a happy painting. I used to play with froggies and crickets and all kinds of fun little animals when I was a kid.

That is great! I was considering getting some of the Strathmore cards. Do you find they work well then?

My daughter does a card ministry where she paints or draws artwork on cards each week for varous people, then includes a Scriptural message and prayer to encourage them. She has been using other paper and attaching it, but I wondered if the Strathmore might work well.

Hello - I am an aspiring artist too. SpiritSong told me about this forum. Here is an artwork which I created for a book of nursery rhymes. I am a little embarrassed to show it as it is seen on a beat up ol' clipboard. It also has quite a few messy places, but I plan to fix them digitally in the future. This picture goes with a dream sequence and the words that match it are, "First a monster from the sea tries to look mean as can be."

I did it with alcohol markers, pen, colored pencils and Neenah paper.
I felt led to do a book of nursery rhymes, much to my surprise, one morning but it has been going very slowly due to health issues. Any prayers appreciated.

I am enjoying looking at others' work.

Not trying to tell anyone what to do, but if you happen to be okay with telling what medium/s you used, if you didn't already, that would be so interesting. Maybe some can just tell by looking but I'm not so sure I can.

Oops. Needed to try again another way.View attachment 262111

That is great that you are doing the story. And glad you found this section. What is Neenah paper?

As to the medium, the first dog I did in the thread was digital, drawn on a Nintendo 2ds XL in the program Colors 3d.

The dalmation was done in digital, Corel Photopaint, using the oil paint tool.

The eagle is also digital, and was done in Corel Photopaint (similar to photoshop).

Thanks for telling me that. I wouldn't have guessed digital, but something organic. Not that there is anything wrong with digital. I have several art works done that way. I just like the organic feel better somehow.

Oops. Forgot to say Neenah paper is a kind of card stock that is very popular with artists who use alcohol markers, and reasonably priced as well as good quality.
Ah ok, I will look it up. Thanks!

I do a few traditional works. My family does mostly traditional, but I have always enjoyed the speed, and low cost of materials of digital!
