  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Hi guys!

Something REALLY funny and kind of horrifying happened to me at Mass this evening and I just have to share it with everyone...

My husband was baptized Greek Orthodox and so he usuallly does take communion with me at Mass. (I am not totally sure this is OK with The Church but I can't see why it wouldn't be) Anyway, unfortunately we have been kind of church hopping alot lately and one of the last churches we went to together did communion a little differently. They had you come up and get the host and a little cup of wine and then go back to your seat and take it as a family.

Well, tonight at the church we have been attending for the last few weeks
(I think I am going to stick with this one) we went up for communion, I was in front of my husband. I held my hands out, took the host and then placed it in my mouth, said "Amen" did the sign of the cross and walked off. My husband on the other hand held his hand out, took the host, kept it in his hand, and walked off, heading toward his seat with the host still in his hand! Suddenly the Deacon started down the aisle after him with a horrified look on his face. When he caught up with him he said "Consume the host!" Everyone was looking at my husband like he had two heads! I felt so sorry for him, how embarrasing!

Just thought you guys would get a kick out of that! Can you imagine how embarrassed he must have been?

As far as I know, Orthodox are permitted to receive communion. However, I *believe* they are supposed to ask permission from their pastor first.

You should report this parish, however, the bishop probably already knows about it...ugh...

I'm sure this was VERY embarrassing for your husband, but the deacon was right to do what he did.

Yes I know! I heard that like a while back people were actually stealing the hosts to use in black masses! How sick is that?

Anyway at least now he knows the routine. He is really just coming back to church himself after a long time away so I really felt bad for him but he's OK. :)

Allowed by the Catholic Church but might not be allowed by his.

Members of the Orthodox churches and the Polish National Catholic Churches share a more intimate bond with us, however. They may receive the Eucharist when they ask for it and they are properly disposed (cf. Canon 844). Again, I would refer to the Catechism of the Catholic Church:

The Eastern churches that are not in full communion with the Catholic Church celebrate the Eucharist with great love. "These Churches, although separated from us, yet possess true sacraments, above all - by apostolic succession - the priesthood and the Eucharist, whereby they are still joined to us in closest intimacy." A certain communion in sacris...is not merely possible but is encouraged." (Catechism of the Catholic Church, number 1399)

Oops! Before I knew that Christ was really present in the Eucharist (just to show how poorly catechized I was), I, too kept the host in my hand when I went back to my seat. No one saw it and came after me or anything. The reason I did this, is because a friend of mine had just had some surgery and I knew she couldnt' go to Mass. I decided to take her communion. No, I wasn't a Eucharistic minister. But in spite of my ignorance, I did treat the host as "sacred". I carefully wrapped it in kleenex that I'd brought with me and guarded it until I could give it to my friend. When I open the kleenex to give it to her, she sort of gasped and asked if it was consecrated. I said, "yes....the body of Christ". She took it and said "Amen" and crossed herself. She of course, understood the significance of my having it and I think she was a little shocked. Oh well. I didn't sin, because I didn't know. But later I did confess it and still feel a little badly about it.

Christy, you're correct. The whole reason why receiving the host by the mouth was instituted was because of host abuses in the early days...

Now, however, it's not required, although you'll see plenty of "old schoolers" continue to receive via the mouth.

And that's fine.

He's probably not recognized by the Church, yet the Church can't denie anyone who want's to take communion.

Not to sound condescending. Were you sure that you were at a Catholic Church? It just sound to wreckless for someone to allow that.

I'm sorry I gave you a scare!

Don't worry the Catholic churches around here don't let you walk away with the host in fact THEY CHASE YOU DOWN THE AISLE ! Poor Deacon! I cannot imagine what the man was thinking :(
Well, at least it gave you an opportunity to explain and talk about the Real Presence of Our Lord in the Eucharist!!
