  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Since I'm influenced to an extent by Ayn Rand, here is a good site for dispelling a few popular myths about her.

No, I'm not a social darwinist. No, I don't think that charity or other forms of benevolence are immoral.

No, Roger Ebert, I don't have the attitude of "I'm on board; pull up the lifeline."

Catholicism has all sorts of misconceptions about it. Many of them are contradictory, because criticism comes from both the "left" and the "right" of the theological spectrum. It's even more fun when people use contradictory criticisms at the same time...
  • That we worship Mary.
  • That we worship Saints.
  • That bowing somehow automatically equals worship.
  • That the Church is somehow responsible for every atrocity in European history.
  • That Jesuits are a secret assassin force bent on infiltrating the Protestant world and taking over.
  • That Opus Dei is a secret assassin force.
  • That the Catholic Church does absolutely no good in the world.
  • That we think the Pope is God.
  • That we worship the Pope.
  • That we think the Pope should rule the world.
  • That all priests are child molestors.
  • That Catholicism is all about guilt, guilt, guilt and nothing else.

There are plenty more, but those are the only ones I've come up with off the top of my head and a tiny bit of Wikipedia research.

[*]That Jesuits are a secret assassin force bent on infiltrating the Protestant world and taking over.
But- I thought this one had to be true! There are secret Jesuit infiltrators everywhere. In fact, those who try to dissuade others from believing there are secret Jesuit infiltrators must be secret Jesuit infiltrators themselves!

[*]That Catholicism is all about guilt, guilt, guilt and nothing else.

The people I hear this from the most tend to be non-practicing Catholics.

wicca lol, conjuring faeries is not my bag either.

And speaking of misconceptions... huh? "Conjuring faeries" is not a requirement of Wicca. I guess this goes back to the misconception that all pagans are the same... just as there are a lot of different traditions of paganism, there are a lot of different Wiccan traditions as well. It doesn't make sense to reduce all Wiccan practice down to conjuring faeries because some Wiccans include this in their practice.

(The whole black and white magic/witches thing, and the idea that all witches follow the rule of three or karma... yeah, a lot of pagans/witches don't subscribe to these things either. Some, sure, but again it comes back to the practice of some will never reflect the practice of everyone perfectly.)

Edit: Ah, but that does bring to mind another misconception... just as all pagans aren't Wiccan, all pagans aren't witches either. Another thing I have seen quite a bit lately.

I'm an Native American and a Christian. Despite what seems to be popular belief, I don't worship rocks, trees or animals. I don't practice the ancient spirituality of my ancestors. I don't even know it. I don't have a spiritual guide. I don't pray to the Four Winds and I'm not a Shaman. Oh yes, I don't wear a warbonnet, carry a tomahawk around, smoke a peace pipe or live in a Tipi either. These are just a few misconceptions about Native American Christians.

What are some of the misconceptions people have about your faith?

One of the one I hear most often is that food is kosher because
it is blessed by a rabbi.

what karma is.

the whole Western idea of Enlightenment pasted onto my religion is also a pretty sore point for me.

what consciousness is.

by and large, most of the issues revolve around those three pillars in some manner or another.

Question to Muslims:

Can you be really Love a "Non Muslim" who has absolutely No intention to convert to islam.I am adding the extra clarification to avoid wastage of time, since i know how islamic deception works.

Ignoring your deception remark... yes, I can. My first proof... a Muslim man can marry a Jewish or Christian wife. God says in the Qur'an that God created partners so that love and mercy could exist between them. When a Muslim man is married to a non-Muslim wife, it is natural that he love her. I've read at least one narration that exemplifies the love felt by one of Prophet Muhammad's (pbuh) closest companions to his wife who is reported to have been from Ahl Al-Kitaab.

Many times parents are also non-Muslims. One loves his/her parents as well. Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) clearly loved his uncle Abu Talib and his mother. He cried at his mother's grave which shows his love for her, although she had died as a non-Muslim.

To be honest, my love for other people is often mixed with other feelings. I dislike things about everyone, including myself. No one is perfect. I do not like the fact that a non-Muslim has made the choice to not accept who I believe to be God's final Messenger (or for other than Jews and Christians, more than that), and that feeling will be there. I dislike that choice to disbelieve in Islam, just like I dislike anything that I feel could be of harm to people. I will not love their kufr, but I will love their good.

God is Al-Wadood.. the Loving. I believe that I should emulate the characteristics included within God's Most Beautiful Names. In the verses that state that God does not love the 'kafireen'.. I understand that to mean He does not love that choice. I also notice that it is always said that God does not love such people (could also refer to certain kafireen, plus.. who we consider kuffar in this world might not be so in God's eyes)... and never that He hates.

Additionally, there are different types of non-Muslims... those who are peaceful, and those who try to fight. There are those who seem sincere, even when opposing, and those who seem like they are just working for personal agendas (though only God knows the affairs of the heart in the end). There are those with good manners and humble attitudes, and there are those who are pompous and condescending in their speech. My feelings towards each would be different based on what I perceive from them.

The Qur'an says that God sent Muhammad (pbuh) as a mercy to mankind. You cannot be a mercy to people whom you loathe. When I read scenarios of how he dealt with non-Muslims on an individual and personal basis, I see concern, not hatred. I want to be that kind of person, too.

Generally speaking though, I do feel a stronger affinity and relationship with Muslims.. then with others who believe in God (such as Jews and Christians, etc.) than I would with people who do not believe in God.

P.S. I love Chava. She's nice.

Ignoring your deception remark... yes, I can. My first proof... a Muslim man can marry a Jewish or Christian wife.

First deception rolling In ;).I am not talking about Marriage.

It is lawful(Quran 5:4) for a muslim man to marry a christian or jewish Woman(People of the Book) But she is not Allowed to Practice her religion.

Detailed explanation by islamic scholars quoting Muhammad.

Islam Question and Answer - Wants to marry Christian woman
Islam Question and Answer - Is it permissible to allow a Christian wife to practise her religion in the home?

Quran 002.221 : Do not marry unbelieving women (idolaters), until they believe: A slave woman who believes is better than an unbelieving woman, even though she allures you. Nor marry (your girls) to unbelievers until they believe:

You call that Love ?.Perhaps it is islamic Love.

While we are on this marriage thing a muslim woman cannot be married to a Non Muslim Man because She cannot have control over the religion of her husband.

God says in the Qur'an that God created partners so that love and mercy could exist between them. When a Muslim man is married to a non-Muslim wife, it is natural that he love her.
He loves her in islamic terms.I have given the evidence above.

I've read at least one narration that exemplifies the love felt by one of Prophet Muhammad's (pbuh) closest companions to his wife who is reported to have been from Ahl Al-Kitaab.
Tell us the islamic ruling if it is different from what i wrote above.
Or tell us what Muhammad/allah told about it.

Conjugal Love is irrelevent to the subject at hand. And it is conditional that the Non Muslim woman gives up her religion.

Many times parents are also non-Muslims. One loves his/her parents as well. Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) clearly loved his uncle Abu Talib and his mother. He cried at his mother's grave which shows his love for her, although she had died as a non-Muslim.
This is entirely different subject.i dont want this diversion now.We are talking about friendship.

I also notice that it is always said that God does not love such people (could also refer to certain kafireen, plus.. who we consider kuffar in this world might not be so in God's eyes)... and never that He hates.
Your feelings have nothing to do with islam. To clarify the Bolded part Allah Hates "Non Muslims"(Kaafirs) (who refuse to become Muslims) unconditionally. It is Also the view expressed in All Islamic scriptures ,interpretations(Tafsirs)

Your feelings are irrelevent as long as you don't support that with Authentic Islamic literature or scholars.A "Non Muslim" who rejects Islam deserves Allah's hate, whether he is peaceful or Not.

Thanks for some clarity.

I am wary of a Muslim who knows his/her islam very well.Reasons are given and being given.

Knows their Islam, or knows your Islam? There are many interpretations of all major religions, as demonstrated in this forum alone. I hope you're not expecting Muslims to believe how you think they're supposed to.

I have to admit JJ sounds sincere.

Let us see what the islamic scholars(Those living in islamic countries) say about loving a Jew.

Muslim Clerics: The Jews Are the Descendants of Apes, Pigs, And Other Animals

Depicting Jews – and sometimes also Zionists – as "the descendants of apes and pigs" is extremely widespread today in public discourse in the Arab and Islamic worlds.

For example, in a weekly sermon in April 2002, Al-Azhar Sheikh Muhammad Sayyid Tantawi, the highest-ranking cleric in the Sunni Muslim world, called the Jews "the enemies of Allah, descendants of apes and pigs."[1]

"Read history," called Al-Sudayyis in another sermon, "and you will understand that the Jews of yesterday are the evil fathers of the Jews of today, who are evil offspring, infidels, distorters of [others'] words, calf-worshippers, prophet-murderers, prophecy-deniers... the scum of the human race 'whom Allah cursed and turned into apes and pigs...' These are the Jews, an ongoing continuum of deceit, obstinacy, licentiousness, evil, and corruption..."[3]

much more in the Link provided above.

Continuing with Post 56:(Tafsirs to come later on)

These statements are made not only by clerics and preachers. Following their lead, public opinion leaders in the Arab world also call the Jews "the descendants of apes and pigs." The image has pervaded the public consciousness, even in child-rearing.

In May 2002, Iqraa, the Saudi-Egyptian satellite television station, which according to its website[7] sets for itself the goals of "highlighting aspects of Arab Islamic culture that inspire respect," "highlighting the true and tolerant picture of Islam and refuting the accusations directed against Islam," and "planting a spirit of mutual understanding and dialogue among members of the nation and opening channels of cultural connection with the cultures of other nations,"

interviewed a three-and-a-half-year-old "real Muslim girl" about Jews. On "The Muslim Woman Magazine" program, the girl was asked whether she liked Jews; she answered, "no." When asked why she didn't like them, she said that Jews were "apes and pigs." "Who said this?" the moderator asked. The girl answered, "Our God." "Where did He say this?" "In the Koran.
