• Starting today August 7th, 2024, in order to post in the Married Couples, Courting Couples, or Singles forums, you will not be allowed to post if you have your Marital status designated as private. Announcements will be made in the respective forums as well but please note that if yours is currently listed as Private, you will need to submit a ticket in the Support Area to have yours changed.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

This website has links to .PDF formatted posters on logical fallacies. There is a simpler version and two others which go into more detail. None are perfect since it would take more than a simple chart to teach logic and logical fallacies, but they make great references:

Thou shalt not commit logical fallacies

While people are sometimes guilty of committing logical fallacies such as those depicted, others are guilty of accusing someone of a fallacy when, in fact, either no fallacy exists or the accusation made on the wrong type of fallacy (Fallacy Fallacy)

A common one both seen on discussion forums and being accused on forums is a "straw man argument" (misrepresenting a person's comment in order to make it easier to attack). Another common fallacy is the personal attack (Ad hominem).

That's pretty cool. I seriously considered printing it out for my wall before realising I only have an A4 printer XD

Generally I avoid trying to call people out on fallacies in a forum because it is more helpful (and interesting) to explain why they are wrong rather than get into an argument over if it is a fallacy or not.

Thanks for your response.

Agreed about "calling people out" as being a negative and that it is more helpful to explain why they are wrong rather than arguing with them. My point was twofold; to help all of us to formulate more logical arguments and to help all of us recognize fallacies in others.

I admit to being less than altruistic here. First and foremost, by posting this, I have a link to find the links I posted simply by researching my own threads.

Second, for those who don't like to debate, but love to learn, on how to recognize fallacious arguments. It isn't a surprise for anyone here to know that some people think berating, insulting or otherwise bullying a poster into submission makes them a "winner". It doesn't. It just makes them a bully.
