You are the first in my experience to suggest that Genesis 1:28 offers anything other than a commandment. The debate before the twentieth century revolved around the nature of fertility. Is it sexual, intellectual, etc? My Christian friends take a modern view. They think Genesis 1:28 commands stewardship of the creation, which as near as I can tell, is not a subject in which Biblical authors had any interest.
