  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

What a great verse. Thanks for bringing it to the forefront on my attention. Which brings me to your question. I think this verse is saying keep thanksgiving in the forefront of your thinking while in prayer.
How would YOU explain this scripture?

"Devote yourselves to prayer, keeping alert in it with an attitude of thankgiving." Colossians 4:2

Let's first of all lay the context of the verse;

Paul's letter to the Colossians is one of encouragement and some instruction, the instruction being found in 3:1-4:18 starting theologically in 3:1 Paul talks about our newness in the image of Christ and then in 3:18-4:1 Paul talks of how this plays out in the submission of ourselves to one another. I think the point Paul is getting into is to be consistent in our prayer lives and be thankful to God for what he has done in remaking you and the community you have with other believers, there is much to be thankful for.

Some thoughts on prayer;
I see prayer as a lining my will up with God's, to me being thankful for what God has done in me is an important part of that.

Think about it like this...Satan doesn't want you praying. If you pray often then you know spiritual warfare starts right there.

You start to pray and things begin to enter your mind that you wonder "where is this coming from?"

This is the reason for keeping alert in prayer because you have to get your focus on God..that's "being alert" in prayer. Our minds can drift if we're not alert. Prayer can get difficult when you don't put everything aside mentally.

We have to carefully choose the times we pray...times when we're least likely to be distracted and can maintain focus on God.

We should always have the attitude of thanksgiving because Christ made it possible for us to have access to the God the Father. We have much to be thankful for too...our salvation, our health/strength, families, friends, the privilege to serve God, our church fellowship...etc. :thumbsup:
