  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

All of these "college" threads made me think that maybe a thread with tips and advice, things to take, things to do, etc from those of use who have been there might be helpful for those going off to college in a few weeks. I know when I left for school as a freshman, a good friend (2 years older than myself and already a junior in college) told me some things to make sure I had that I never would have thought to take - it was valuable advice!

Here's a few that I found particularly helpful:

1) Pack a first aid kit. Doesn't have to be fancy, but make sure you include tylenol/ibuprofen, cold medicine, bandaids, small gauze pads/tape. You may never need it, but if you do, you will be grateful for not having to go out and get it. When you get sick, going out to buy medicine is one of the last things you want to do...especially if you will not have a car and may have to walk to the drugstore!

2) Elevate your bed using cinder blocks. Dorm rooms typically don't have a lot of storage space. Elevating your bed gives you plenty of room to store things underneath. For my first 2 years (when I lived on campus in the dorms), I had all of my clothes under my bed in storage boxes, plus kept my laundry basket (which also served as my clothes hamper so I didn't have to have both in the room) under my bed.

3) Have 2 3 or 5 subject notebooks, plus a folder with looseleaf paper in it. This was a lifesaver for me. I used 2 3 subject notebooks...one for my MWF classes and one for my TTH classes. This is what I carried to class with me, in addition to a folder full of looseleaf paper. It was a lot easier than carrying a separate notebook for each class. In my room, I had binders for each class and could take the notes out of the notebook I carried and put them into the binders. It's always a good idea to have some looseleaf paper on you in case you have to turn something in during class. But with all of your books, plus a notebook for each class, your bookbag tends to get a little heavy!

4) Leave your dorm room open! Unless you are studing! Seriously...if you are in your room piddling, watching TV, etc, leave your door open. It's a way of meeting people that live on your hall. People stop in and talk, or you can say something to them as they pass by.

5) 3M tabs are the bomb! They are the ones with the "command release" where you pull the tab and off they come without damaging the walls. Many schools have policies in place where you can't nail anything to the wall, or use mounting tape because it removes the paint...and if you do, you are fined. The 3M tabs work really well to hang pictures, bulletin boards, hooks for coats/towels, etc.

6) EARPLUGS! There are times that you will go to bed and your roommate is furiously typing a paper and the tapping on the keys will just drive you insane! (Or they are in the room talking to their boyfriend/girlfriend until 4:00 in the morning on the day you have a midterm) It happens...the joys of living with someone. Earplugs will be your friend during these times.

7) Dry erase boards. I would say get 2. Put one on the outside of your door so people can leave you messages - we loved these in college and left random messages for our friends quite often, and the same was done to us. But, one INSIDE your room is a good idea too. This way, you and your roommate can leave messages just for one another...missed phone calls, reminders, etc - and they can be erased, and seen better than just leaving each other a note.

8) Floppy disks! Even if you do not have your own computer at school with you, you will likely be writing papers or doing work in the computer labs and you will need to be able to save your work.

9) Liquid soap for the shower and shower shoes. Liquid soap is so much easier to take to the shower with you than a bar of soap is. And don't step foot in the shower without shower shoes on...heaven knows what's been in there!

10) Clip on light for your bed. If you will be up late studying and your roommate wants to go to bed, you will be able to read/work in your bed without really disturbing them. The "snake" lights (the ones that are bendable) work really well.

11) A FULL SIZE trash can. Plus a small wastebasket beside your desk. If you use a small wastebasket for everyday trash, you are going to be taking it out countless times. A full size one will greatly minimize your trips to your friend the dumpster.

There are more, but I thought this would be a start. Other college veterans...share your tips... :)

RELAX Don't over extend yourself. I am not saying that you need to go out everynight and party. What I am saying is don't study all the time, this can cause burn out, trust me I know. My first year in college all I did was study all the time. By second semester I had bronchitis and some other health problems. You need to make sure that you are getting enough sleep and eating right.

Here's my take on your list, and I'll put in some advice of my own.

1) Pack a first aid kit. I kept a bottle of Aleve by my computer, just in case. I don't think I ever used it.

2) Elevate your bed using cinder blocks. Lots of universities have the option to loft your bed, which I did. Opens up the room like nothing else :)

3) Have 2 3 or 5 subject notebooks, plus a folder with looseleaf paper in it. I have a single notebook for each class, but I got one of those big 12-slot business portfolios to act as a folder for all my classes. Incredibly convenient.

4) Leave your dorm room open! I couldn't agree more.

5) 3M tabs are the bomb! We used the clear packaging tape you use for mailing packages, and it worked great with our walls.

6) EARPLUGS! I never thought to bring earplugs. Granted, having worked nights for the past 2 summers, I've learned to be able to sleep through anything. Plus, my roommate and I were usually up late playing video games together, so it didn't matter.

7) Dry erase boards. We had one on our door, which was very nice. I know people who had them in their rooms, but my roommate and I were usually there at the same time and stuff, so it really didn't matter.

8) Floppy disks! Again, I couldn't agree more.

9) Liquid soap for the shower and shower shoes. I use one of those plastic soap box thingies and it works fine. As for the shower shoes thing... I don't see why everyone throws such a fit. Have you seen them wash those things? I'm surprised the tile stays on, nonetheless anything trying to live in there :p

10) Clip on light for your bed. Again, my roommate and I had similar sleep patterns, so this wasn't a big deal.

11) A FULL SIZE trash can. Our school provided a trash can and two recycle bins(paper and aluminum/glass), so for my roommate and I it was 3 trash cans, and when put next to each other, the garbage can pile up nicely. Taking out trash wasn't a problem for us.

Ok, here's my one bit of advice: look at everything you're bringing, and cut it in half, especially clothes. It makes moving in a lot easier, and you're gonna be glad you've got the space. Anything vital you leave home you can either borrow from someone, buy at school, or live without till you go home first. Some people think it's cool to have 2 or 3 weeks worth of clothes there, so they can go longer without washing, but I go just as long without washing on one week of clothes ;) One thing you learn at college is that it's ok to wear something that's visibly dirty.

To earn good grades in college you don't need to be a mastermind...

1. Sit close to the front row to limit distractions
2. Manage your time well...this one is KEY, the semesters I look back on when I recieved the best grades occurred when I made excellent use of my time.
3. Connect with your professors as much as possible. If they can put a name to a face this may benefit your grade a little. Come time for grade distribution, they will reflect on your determination/persistence to do well.

These are all awesome tips! the only one i think that you guys missed is to study in groups. it's impossible to write down every single word in class, and someone else could have some important info that you missed.
Also, try to be patient with roomates that are totally opposite of you. if they need to sleep and you need to study, head down to the lounge or up to the library. if they're trying to study, turn the music down. it's all very common sense stuff, but believe me, it makes all the difference :D

The studying thing depends on the individual. Some people do better studying in groups. Others, myself included, do fine with paying attention to what the teacher is saying then reviewing the notes later. I've found that in most cases, when I'm involved, group studying doesn't happen :p

If you're one of those people that records lectures, ASK YOUR TEACHER FIRST, I had a professor who saw someone recording the lecture and got really upset and kicked her out because she didn't ask.

Also, as much as it stinks, try to do the readings assigned, even if the teacher just spits it all out straight from the book. Sometimes its easier to learn for the test. Good review too.

Save your change, especially quarters. This comes in handy for many reasons. A lot of dorms/apartments make you pay to do laundry. There are coke machines or snack machines, pay phones, and if you drive you might have to pay a parking meter.

Take a couple of extra pillows, they are good to have. You never know when you have a friend over or need an extra cushion

If you have a dorm room where the closet doesnt have a door, but you dont want your closet to really show- put up a shower curtain. that way it makes your room look a little cleaner and you can find one you like to help "decorate" easy way to hide a mess too

Here are some tips coming from my experience;

1. Get plugged into a ministry on campus. I can't stress this enough! I go to a smaller college liberal-arts college, but I thought everyone would be Christian. No, that is not the case. Take the time and ask around to find a good, solid Bible teaching and outreaching campus club or group. You won't be disappointed if you do!

2. Get to know people. This seems obvious, but you are going to go through a lot of things. Ask the Lord to lead you into someone's parth and vice versa. You'll never know how much of impact you make for Jesus when you open yourself up to new people.

3. Get your homework done ASAP. Ok, I am 4.0 student, but this one seems to be underrated. I really hate having homework in the first place, but in my classes it is essential to just keeping up (not just for an A). So I went into college just saying that the best thing I can do is get it done first, period. That way I can just go do whatever--hang out with friends, join a campus club, witness, whatever. If you put it off, you are going to suffer because you will procrastinate. Even if it the early afternoon or late morning, get it done there...Trust me, you will thank yourself.

4. If you live close, stay home the first weekends. If you are feeling homesick, resist the temptation to go home or to somewhere away from college. Study after study shows that people who are willing to make the effort now to stay will not only make friends, but will have a better college experience.

5. Get a chair for people to sit in. This kind of goes with #2, but have an extra chair available for guests to sit in. You can buy those cheap camping chair that fold up for like $6 bucks at any store now because summer is over. Then, if you need the room, you can simply put it in its bag.

6. Either loft beds or make them one unit. It is totally true that your dorm room is SMALL. So I would suggest lofting your bed high, putting your desk and dresser undeerneath, or asking your roommate to make both beds one unit and putting them in a corner. Trust me, space is vital to sanity there.!

7. Exercise and eat well. Yeah, yeah, you are away at college. And it is ok to eat that late-night snack or grab a pizza every now and then. But I can honestly say I have seen my fellow hallmates and others suffer because of their eating habits. The "freshman 15" (pounds), low energy, etc., hurt your psyche. And when that happens, everything else crumbles, including your quiet time and service to the Lord.

8. Take a shower (and wear shower shoes!)! If you have a community bathroom, make sure you wear shower shoes. If you have a suite-bathroom, make you wear shower shoes. One guy in my hall went without them one time and he got sick and infected on his feet. If there is anything to do, get clean, but make sure you take some shoes!

9. Take just enough stuff. Again, space is great in dorm rooms. If you know an item is not essential, chances are it is not. Save yourself a headache and take a little bit more than the minimum.

10. Be yourself. This isn't high school--this is a bubble of the "real world"! So make every attempt to be the person God has created you to be and let Him work through that, not a fake front.

There are tons more, but just get in there and have fun! College is not all about academics, it is about life lessons, friends, clubs, and lame food...and stinky hallmates!

a fan.
Fans are awesome.

In case you can't deal with hearing protection, such as earplugs and the like as noise attenuation.
Headphones for same reason and also if you need tunes and your roomie is sleeping.

Some compaines such as Sennheiser and Etymotic also make noise cancellation headphones.
Heh. Someday peace and quiet will be important.

Label your floppies.

Try not to be as much of a nerd as I am.

Get a box with a padlock on it if you have stuff that you don't want your idiot roommate going through.

If you're studying and you have a lot of material, it's not always beneficial to organize it. You might spend the whole time organizing the information, and not studying. I think "organizing" is a good excuse to ourselves to not actually study, while still "handling" the material. SO JUST READ IT ALREADY!!

That is so nasty pope! Public restrooms of ANY form are nasty, trust me, I have to clean them at work!

But I've seen them cleaning the showers at my school, and trust me: they could only be more thorough if they torched them!

But seriously, folks. They're only feet. You're not gonna get HIV from going barefoot in a shower. After 14 years of hockey, there aren't many things that my feet haven't been through. Tinactin is truly a gift from God!

Lay down boundaries with your roommate when you move in. My fiance stayed in the dorms his first year of school, and left for a while one day and his roommate downloaded porn onto his new laptop, which I, unhappily discovered. So make sure your roommate knows what lines not to cross.

Go to class- I can't stress this one enough. I am a pretty good student, and I am good at learning on my own. But my first semester of college was awful because I skipped class all the time (slept through it while trying to adjust to working the night shift). My grades have improved dramatically just from going to class.

Use different study methods. Try making flash cards, or playing a game with studying. Changing things up a bit may help you learn the material better.

If you can get a laptop, then go for it, they are very nice to have. My fiance has a dvd player on his, so he could watch movies, and do his homework. It worked very well for his first year.

And here is my take on the original post:

1) Pack a first aid kit.....not needed, instead use a t-shirt to wrap wounds and use whats left in the liquor bottle for sore throats, headaches etc.

2) Elevate your bed using cinder blocks....not needed, the middle of the floor is plenty of space for storing things

3) Have 2 3 or 5 subject notebooks, plus a folder with looseleaf paper in it.........too many, just have one for every class and cram all looseleaf papers/homework/etc. into it, then throw it in the backseat of your car.

4) Leave your dorm room open!......unless you are naked or sleeping

5) 3M tabs are the bomb! .......... againg using the middle of the floor is cheaper

6) EARPLUGS! ........ its cheaper and more fun to use your two fists

7) Dry erase boards.........ok these are useful

8) Floppy disks!........also helpful

9) Liquid soap for the shower and shower shoes.......or just dont use the shower at all

10) Clip on light for your bed......use the normal room light provided, make your roomate stay awake while you study late, after all they did make you stay up till 4:00 while they talked on the phone.

11) A FULL SIZE trash can.......not needed, instead use the floor or the toilet or under your roomates matress

*note: if more storage space/trash space is required use either you car or the hallway.

Pope - if you don't agree with the tips people have, that's cool...no one said that everyone will find all of these helpful. But these are the things that each individual has found worked best for themselves and we are throwing it out so that others can see what we have done/learned, etc. If you don't like a tip, don't use it! No big deal and no need to refute every tip that people suggest! :)

Oh, and you CAN get HIV through your feet, or anywhere else on your body that you could have any slight break in the skin. As small as a pin prick is enough of an opening to let HIV or any other bacteria in your body. And not ALL colleges keep their showers super clean. Wearing shower shoes is not difficult, and is just a precaution to protect yourself from something that COULD happen.

Again, no one is saying that people HAVE to do these things...this is all just things that everyone on here has found useful for themselves. If it doesn't sound right for you, just disregard it!

1) My suggestion to anyone is to get involved. Studies have proven that being in at least one extracurricular activity will help raise your GPAs, which is ALWAYS nice.

2) If you are struggling in class- TELL THE PROF. This allows him/her to know that you are struggling and as well allows them to be able to provide extra help.

3) Get to know the people you live with. Life is not all about studying and making the grade. While that is important it is just as important to get to know the people you live with. My roommates and I have a "date night" once a week in which we go and hangout somewhere, just the 3 of us. As well we spend countless hours just hanging out.

4) Get to know your RA. They are there to serve YOU. As an RA myself, I know that it is so much easier to help those that I know. For example, if Girl A couldn't get her room cleaned before roomcheck, however, she has made the time to come and talk to me and get to know me.. I am more able to help her out.

5) Don't stress TOO much about grades. While grades are an important aspect of school don't become so consumed with grades and studying that you have no life.

6) Get involved with Residence Life. If Res Life is have a movie night or something, attend. This is a great way to meet new people and a great way to get away from studying.
