No, it's not a wrong assumption. I'm not saying that everyone, every time they drink they get plastered. I'm saying that alcohol serves no other purpose. If you're not drinking to get drunk, you're drinking to be socially accepted or to better relax. Nobody drinks just for the heck of it.i know people who don't drink to get drunk. that's a wrong assumption.
I know I can honestly say I love the taste of wine...but that's besides the point of this thread.msjones21 said:Okay bottom line, why do people drink? Not one person can honestly say "oh I just do it because I love the way it tastes".
It's already started. Go figure.....Breetai said:I wonder if this will turn into a "is drinking really a sin" debate.
msjones21 said:What part of taking care of the temple do you not uderstand? Does alcohol not affect your body? I'm not talking about the occasional glass of wine with dinner.
You're grasping at reasons to make drinking acceptable and as a Christian, it's not a good witness. As far as caffeine and refined sugar ruining your body, why do you think the Mormons don't consume caffeine? Not only that, but how often does someone eat a piece of chocolate cake, get in the car, and then get into an accident killing innocent people? All it takes is one drink to impair your judgment.caffine affects the body. so does sugar, perservatives and a number of other things.
msjones21 said:Okay bottom line, why do people drink? Not one person can honestly say "oh I just do it because I love the way it tastes". Alcohol is an acquired taste. I loved drinking back int he day because it helped me loosen up in social settings. People drink to get drunk, it serves no other purpose. Coke tastes better than a beer, but being the only person in a group of people at a bar drinking a Coke doesn't look "cool". People drink to fit in, people drink to get drunk, people drink to unwind. Those are all sinful, selfish reasons to partake of alcoholic beverages.
msjones21 said:1. Yes, drinking is a sin. Proverbs says wine is a mocker and beer is a brawler. And Jesus turned water into wine, but He did not partake of it. Also, there were three types of beverages that have been translated as "wine" in the Bible. One was a grape juice that people would drink during celebration. One was a strong drink for people who were painfully ill. The last was a fermented drink that caused drunkeness. The wine Jesus turned the water into was a grape juice. So yes, social drinking is a sin. Are you edifying Christ? Would you hold up a beer can with Jesus sitting next to you and say "cheers!"?
2. Yes, playing with people's emotions and getting phone numbers for sport is a sin.
3. Clubbing isn't sinful in and of itself but I highly doubt anyone goes clubbing to be a Christian witness. Would you be ashamed if you ran into someone you had been witnessing to at the club? Do you dance seductively with people? Do you listen to music that is meant to arouse sexual curiosity? Do you drink, smoke, or do drugs to enhance your "clubbing" experience?
msjones21 said:Why do you need beer to unwind? Is that not an addiction? Does alcohol not harm the body? Look at how it destroys the liver. The Bible says your body is a temple. We're not taking care of the temple when we have to drink a beer every day when we get home from work just because our day was stressful. How much more edifying would it be to Christ to turn to Him for peace instead of a beer?
Drinking is a sin? Really? I would like to see where the Bible clearly or whatever authority states this as such.msjones21 said:1. Yes, drinking is a sin. That is a hasty generalization and is not true for all individuals.msjones21 said:People drink to get drunk, it serves no other purpose.
Again that is not always true. I truly couldn't care less to fit in with any kind of crowd.msjones21 said:People drink to fit in, people drink to get drunk, people drink to unwind.
