  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

So I go to a tech-school, not a traditional college - at least not until I have my associates and transfer back up North. But anyhow, I wanted to know, from those of you who deal with a similar environment that will be explained in a moment, how you deal with it?

Here's the situation.

The school I go to is relatively small, as far as schools go. I can't give a real estimate as to how many people attend, we have weird schedules that fluctuate on given days, but there are roughly 800 people there a night on the nights that I have class. I also work part time as a work-study for the registrar and the library, so I'm there almost all the time anymore. The environment seems to be horribly anti-Christian, there are a lot of expressed atheists and the general "rebellious populace" of post-high school teenagers, and many of the teachers there encourage this at any given turn, and worse still because of the nature of the school. We don't have any Christian ministry within the school, and I have yet to even meet a fellow Christian - I'm very open about my religion, which is both a blessing and a curse. I've established some close friendships with some of the more avowed atheists in my classes, as strange as that seems, and they actually have a lot of respect for my beliefs and don't single me out because I refuse to take part in some of the stuff they do. That alone was amazing to me, and I try to use it as a form of personal outreach whenever possible. But the problem I have is that I've recently begun to notice how difficult it is for me to grow spiritually when I'm surrounded by so many people who I can't talk to (without it turning into a debate, or worse). I have my Church, but they don't have much of a youth ministry, and I'd feel weird about going to a different Church than the rest of my family here. If I was totally independant right now, I'd be perfectly content to find a different Church.

So the question is, how to deal with this? I have a year or so more to go before I graudate, and I'm not yet sure how long until I can transfer back home. Once I do that, though, this won't be such a problem because my Church at home is ideal for college aged people. Big Church, lots of members, and a huge youth outreach ministry. Not to mention, I already have a lot of friends there who are probably much more mature in their spirituality than I am. But for now, it seems that I'm stuck and looking for options. Any advice?

This is definately a difficult situation and I have been in a similiar one. The only recommendations I have is #1 pray like crazy. Why? Because it's so easy to lose ones faith in a non christian evironment. #2 Remember that Jesus at with sinners and that it is not a sin for you to have non Christian friends. Lastly "Preach the Gospel at all times, if necisary use words." Show you are a Christian through ur action and it will bring Christian to you and might convert a few athiests in the process :). Hope that helps. I'll be praying for you!

Why is it that you can not find a different church? is it because there is no church with the same denomination around? Even if there is not much of a youth ministry, you are 22. Have you tried going to an adult Bible study. This may give you Christians to fellowship with. Sometimes I think that it is better to have integrated Bible studies with people of all ages, because we can all learn for each other. Older people often can share much wisdom, which younger people have not yet aquired. This may help you when you are in the anti-Christian environment at school.

Well, the whole Church thing is rather complicated. I'm really not sure about denominations, and don't want to wander into unfamiliar territory.

Our current Church is wonderful, just....too small. Which is where a lot of the problems come from.

The Lord has me here for a reason, though... I just have to figure out what that is. And I definitely agree with the whole "spread the gospel at all times, if necessary use words" quote. I've been trying to keep that in heart and mind at school every day. ^_^

So let me get this straight - you've got family in the city where your college is, and family back in your hometown, correct?

And this is a technical college, meaning that it is more like a community college, with no on-campus living, correct?

Correct on both accounts.

I'm currently living with extended family (grandparents) to make it less difficult financially, and to make their life easier to whatever extent I can.

OK, in that case here is the problem with getting a campus ministry together: The Christian students are already plugged into their churches. The same hunger for a Bible study and fellowship will not be there as much as it is at a university where people go away from home and feel alone. That's not to say that you can't help start a Bible study or someone else locally might not feel lead to. But are there ANY flyers up at all advertising student ministry at any of the local churches?

Not that I'm aware of, although I'm still in the process of investigating that venue. We have a huge variety of Churches down here, which is definitely a good thing.

I've really not even met a single fellow Christian in this school since I've been there; almost a year and a half now.

Hmm. All I can say is check the bulletin boards at your college regularly and see what the local churches are doing. You may well be able to attend some sort of fellowship at night and still do family church on Sunday morning.
