• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Hi guys,

As you know, the standard secular method against OCD is the so-called "cognitive-behavioral" therapy. You expose yourself to the troubling thoughts, and then test yourself in order to stop "pleasing" your anxiety with compulsions.

I feel this would really, really be helpful to me. However, since my OCD is religious in nature (I get flooded with all kinds of blasphemous thoughts that are condemned by the Bible), my question is if exposing myself to the thoughts without any attempt to suppress them would be considered sinful from the perspective of Christianity.

Bear in mind that I, like most if not all OCD patients, get absolutely no pleasure or satisfaction from the thoughts. I hate them, and I find them extremely disgusting (I'd share some with you but I feel that it is unnecessary). However, I feel that exposing myself to them is necessary in order to get rid of the illness once and for all.

If this has been asked before, just link me to the thread.

Hello nevertheless, How could Christ, the most loving being in the universe who loves us infinitly beyond our comprehension hold it against you for exposing yourself to these thoughts in hopes of healing from the ocd:). The Lord knows that you hate these thoughts and want them gone. Im going through my own hell with my own ocd religious thoughts and I cant wait to start exposure and response therapy, but finding a reasonably priced therapist is tough now. It seems to me that your greatest desire is to love our Lord, just as its mine. I know with everything in my heart and soul that he wouldnt hold it against you. Our God is a God of love, compassion and understanding, not a God of pure laws and rigidity:)

I hope this helps my friend:)

Listen to CC, nevertheless.

I went through ERP (CBT) therapy and exposed myself to all those nasty thoughts. It worked, and I'm rid of them. Just as Jesus holds a cancer patient in His loving arms during treatment, He holds us during our treatment too. He loves us all the same.
