Do you traditional Adventists still discourage the use of coffee and tea? It was that way when I was a kid, but in later years my SDA dad used to drink coffee sometimes, and I think my mom drinks a Mountain Dew occasionally. Is caffeine less stigmatized now than it was years ago in Adventist circles?

I know my parents have always loved coffee and they are late 50s. I think it is even more of a treat to them because it is something they knew they weren't supposed to have when they were growing up SDA. The forbidden fruit effect of wanting what you can't have.

I know a lot of Adventists and they all seem to enjoy coffee immensely. I think EGW's anti coffee and tea stances are filed away in the "health advice" cabinet and not in the "salvational issues" cabinet with things like alcohol.

Seems sensible to me, and I'm glad to hear it. I was hoping my parents weren't becoming rebelious in their faith.

Any other thoughts from our traditional brothers and sisters on the subject of coffee?

I tend to drink Teechino, which is a herbal coffee... I will however, have an occasional cup of real coffee about once a week. My wife still drinks a couple cups a day...

I feel the advice is sound on abstaining from caffiene, but we are laodicea, so we can justify anything. ;)

It is a stimulant that has an effect on our bodies, maybe small but an effect none-the-less. I know when I use to drink it regularly and would try and go off, the headache I had for two days was enough to let me know it wasn't innocent.

It is still frowned upon and not available at potlocks. I simply can't tolerate it too well, I used to take it when I was on call and had to be awake all night, or at times when I had to drive somewhere and had to make sure I stayed awake--(I fell asleep at the wheel once in my 20's--thank God no one was hurt, but our car was a bit of a mess)--All I can handle is about 1/4 to 1/2 cup and I am wired. It kicks in at about 20 min and then I start talking, and I seldom shut up!! I drank 2 cups once (I was working all night, had never had coffee before was about 20)--my heart rate went up over 130, and I threw up--and once it's in me--it stays in me a very long time--much longer than normal people. I even avoid chocolate.

I probably average one cup of coffee a day, and one cup of tea. I was just curious if traditional Adventist were strongly against it or not. Looks like my caffeine intake wouldn't exclude me from SDA circles.

I do remember years ago, at least at the church I was brought up in, it was frowned on and gossipped about.

Wow, I wouldn't touch the stuff if I were you.

Does Ellen White have a comment on coffee and tea?

If it wasn't for coffee I would have no ambition in life. One morning I finished off a strong pot of coffee and was feeling ambitious for the day. So as I was driving down the road, I found that everyone was in my way. Lead, follow, or get the hell out of the way, just do something! I can always tell when I have had to much coffee, it's when I do hand springs across the parking lot. One day I was driving a friend to work when a person passed me doing about 85 Mph. He said, " I wonder what his big hurry was." I looked over at him and said, "too much coffee." Some say coffee is a mind altering experience, but I have my doubts about that. I do not recall ever changing my mind after coffee. Besides that, I'm certain that you are all in my way.:p;)

Things like mustard and pickles are also strongly warned against. In this quote we see that they make your blood "impure". Mustard leaves your stomach inflamed and soon ordinary foods no longer quench your appetite and you must move on to even MORE stimulating things.

In this fast age, the less exciting the food, the better. Condiments are injurious in their nature. Mustard, pepper, spices, pickles, and other things of a like character, irritate the stomach and make the blood feverish and impure. The inflamed condition of the drunkard's stomach is often pictured as illustrating the effect of alcoholic liquors. A similarly inflamed condition is produced by the use of irritating condiments. Soon ordinary food does not satisfy the appetite. The system feels a want, a craving, for something more stimulating.

Cocaine will do the same thing... just at the next level.

I'm a little confused. Didn't you say you drink coffee occasionally, and your wife drinks a couple cups a day? This post sounds like you're discouraging it's use.

It was little tongue in cheek response to Marstens 'Coffee helps me to get things done quicker' post.

As I said in my previous post, I do recognize it's harmful, addictive properties and I, nor my wife, are doing our very best in still drinking it.

I'm glad you don't see it as salvational or anything like that. I put coffee right in there with Doritos and M&M's in that "probably not great for you" catagory.

A growing body of research shows that coffee drinkers, compared to nondrinkers, are:

  • less likely to have type 2 diabetes, Parkinson's disease, and dementia
  • have fewer cases of certain cancers, heart rhythm problems, and strokes
