<SPAN class=ip-normal-font>Hey I just was wondering what you'all thought of cloning- reproductive and theroputic- I personally am against all cloning because I think it's playing God etc... What's the rest of ya'lls opinion?

It's worse than playing God, it's the supreme ego-trip. Make a new one of yourself in the quest for immortality? Sheesh. How much more self-centered can you get?

And worse, cloning for the purpose of making spare parts, like that new human being is somehow your property to nurture or destroy as you see fit, and to provide his/her heart, liver, etc, if you should chose to have it.

Ego trip!

Well, I know quite a lot about cloning, and I'd say I'm partially against it. The problem is, those that speak out against cloning know nothing about it, so it makes them look like idiots to the science community and creates more frustration than progress. For example, if you clone yourself, that clone will have to grow up, so it will be X years younger than you (X = your age when you clone yourself). Secondly, almost as many of your physical and mental features have to do with mutations rather than genes. A clone would look more like a brother than an exact copy, and it would not think anything like you as that has to do with upbringing.

A great number of diseases could be cured with embryonic research, as well as physical problems (such as parylization) and women who normally couldn't have kids would be able too (not by cloning someone and implanting them, rather cloning an egg and injecting it with sperm). Still, I do believe its wrong.

But here comes the parable. I don't think its the place of our (American) government to tell people what they can and can't do as far as science is concerned. If God hates cloning that much, he will stop it. America was founded on freedom. There are many things I believe are wrong, but I don't think the government has any place outlawing it. For example, I think violence and nudity in movies is bad, but I believe the government has no right controlling artistic expression.

Cloning...

Well, I'm completely against the use of "fetuses" (i.e., BABIES) for any research. That's just sick and wrong :p

As to cloning, I don't think it's that great an idea ;) I think it's wrong. And we'll never be able to create life, either.

I don't see anything inherently different between reproductive cloning and in vitro fertlization. The biggest practical difference is that cloning has such a low success rate that attempting it with humans would be highly unethical.

As for therapeutic cloning, it is more or less creating a twin to destroy in order to cure yourself. This bothers me.

I Think I'm A Clone Now
by Al Yankovic
It is a parody of "I Think We're Alone Now" by Tommy James And The Shondells (and later recorded by Tiffany)

Lyrics:

Isn't it strange
Feels like I'm lookin' in the mirror
What would people say
If only they knew that I was

Part of some geneticist's plan (plan-plan-plan)
Born to be a carbon copy man (man-man-man)
There in a petri dish late one night
They took a donor's body cell and fertilized a human egg and so I say

I think I'm a clone now
There's always two of me just a-hangin' around
I think I'm a clone now
'Cause every chromosome is a hand-me-down

Look at the way
We go out walking close together
I guess you could say
I'm really beside myself

I still remember how it began (gan-gan-gan)
They produced a carbon copy man (man-man-man)
Born in a science lab late one night
Without a mother or a father, just a test tube and a womb with a view

I think I'm a clone now (a clone now)
There's always two of me just a-hangin' around
I think I'm a clone now (a clone now)
'Cause every chromosome is a hand-me-down

I think I'm a clone now (a clone now)
And I can stay at home while I'm out of town
I think I'm a clone now (a clone now)
'Cause every pair of genes is a hand-me-down

Signing autographs for my fans
Come and meet the carbon copy man
Livin' in stereo, it's all right
Well I can be my own best friend and I can send myself for pizza so I say

I think I'm a clone now
Another one of me's always hangin' around
I think I'm a clone now
'Cause every chromosome is a hand-me-down

I think I'm a clone now (a clone now)
I've been on Oprah Winfrey - I'm world renowned
I think I'm a clone now (a clone now)
And every pair of genes is a hand-me-down

I think I'm a clone now (a clone now)
That's my genetic twin always hangin' around
I think I'm a clone now (a clone now)
'Cause every chromosome is a hand-me-down

I think I'm a clone now (a clone now)

I'm against cloning, completely. It is simply an attempt to cure the symptoms of a disease, that which we created ourselves. If they want to lower cases of cancer and various diseases, then maybe we could do without all of the polution, chemicals, synthetic hormones, and the like. When you mess with the natural order in which God created everything, there is always a price to be paid. Cloning is not going to stop or cure the fact that we are hurting our race so dramatically in the effort to have have creature comforts at any cost.

I don't see any login in cloning except mans desire to REPLACE God with science. Now, I can see science working to clone individual organs rather than an individual person. Say a person developed a bad heart - if scientist could somehow clone the heart itself, that would be okay, they wouldn't be trying to produce life just save lives. This actually remind me of a joke I heard years ago.- Scientist decided the were so advanced in knowledge since learning to clone that they felt they no longer needed God. they chose a spokesman to represent them before God. The spokesman was brought before God and boldly told him "Look God, we scientist can create life now, we can cure disease. We don't need you for anything any more."
"I'll tell you what then", God said to the scientist "why don't we have a contest to see if your right. You say you can create anything I can? Alright, lets see who can truly create a life than"
The scientist smiled arrogantly and agreed to the test.
He reached down and picked up a hand full of dirt to bring life forth from but God stopped him
"Oh, no", said God "get your OWN dirt!" :p

Say what?&nbsp; I'm not a biology expert, but I think you need to re-examine your facts.&nbsp; Genetic mutations are extremely rare.&nbsp; What you are saying means that identical twins shouldn't look alike, but we all know they do.&nbsp; Your looks are determined exlusively by genetics (unless you have a good plastic surgeon!)

Why do people feel that cloning is "playing God?" The phrase gets batted around a lot, but it is rarely defined.

because so far what humans have done is to repair the damaged cells or replace them by obtaining organs from a donar. This, is about "creating" life, middling (manipulating) in a process that comes about via different factors (timing, choice of mates) there's a fine difference.

One's physical appearence is very dependent on one's environment as well as one's genetics. Nutritional defficiencies and physical accidents can make someone grow up to look much different.

yeah...i think it's wrong! anyways, i highly doubt that they will be able to clone a human being, because a human being isn't just a thing of flesh, organs, and emotions. when God created us, He put His breath (life) into us.
well..unless they want zombies running around...which i'm not even sure if THAT'S even possilbe...i don't think they should do it.

people need to stop trying to be their own god...
