  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Climate change and evolution denial is going to decrease with time

Enabled by scientific knowledge, developed by people. One of the challenges of technological development is being careful how we use it given the long-term consequences.

That challenge has never been accepted, in my opinion. It's whatever science comes up with.....'Darn' the torpedo's, full speed ahead!

The problem with science is that they suck all the air out of the room.

Those machines are colloquially called vacuums not science

Yes, this is in the U.S.

I have in the past tried to pull data from other countries, but trying to find trend data isn't always easy.
Personally, I wish the acceptance of science and Christianity went together more. It may in some other countries:
"Still, while most people believe in evolution, there is no regional consensus on the broader question of whether scientific and religious worldviews are at odds with one another. In nearly half of the countries surveyed, most respondents see science and religion as generally in conflict, while in the other countries opinion is either closely divided or most people say they don’t see a conflict between the two."
6. Science and religion

There are definitely interesting cultural differences when it comes to religion and different countries, or even regions in countries.

I'm in Canada and it's always fascinating to me how differently religion is treated culturally in the U.S., even though we're next-door neighbors.

Those two things don't tend to go hand in hand.

There is a definite connection.

If you aren't a liberal at age 20, you have no soul.

If you aren't a conservative by age 40, you have no brain.

If you aren't a skeptical, sarcastic old cynic by my age, you haven't been paying attention.

Either this is the in the wrong thread, or I should have stopped at one glass of wine...

I was responding to the comment about young people, Mao and Stalin. Should have quoted that person and gave my post some context.

Weren't scientists involved in every step of developing the A-bomb?

The A-bomb is actually not particularly destructive compared to some other things human beings have used technology for.

True, and the misuse of technology as well.

And many of those same scientists implored the US Government to NOT use it on people but rather show a DEMONSTRATION on an uninhabited island to the Japanese High Command.

What is your problem with science?

Science has imposed itself as the 'great problem solver' (sucking all the air out of the room), but we still have the same old problems, and lots of rich scientists and their business cronies (the Science/Industrial Complex).
