clear contradiction in acts !

this now is important to me, please help me out.....
i am just listening through[mp3-files] through acts...

but what should i now think of this ?

Act 9:7 And the men which journeyed with him stood speechless, hearing a voice, but seeing no man.

Act 22:9 And they that were with me saw indeed the light, and were afraid; but they heard not the voice of him that spake to me.

The Koine Greek word for hearing (Acts 9:7), and heard (Acts 22:9) is akouo and is pronounced ak-oo'-o.

Thayer's Greek English Lexicon of the New Testament says of the word hearing in Acts 9:7 a. to perceive the distinct words of a voice: Jn.5:25,28; Acts 9:7, 11:7; Acts 22:7; Heb.3:7,15 .

Thayer's says of the word heard in Acts 22:9: 1. to hear something; a. to perceive by the ear what is announced in one's presence, (to hear immediately): Mt.12:19; Jn. 3:8; Rev.4:1; Rev.5:11; Rev.18:4; Acts 22:9, etc.;

Act 9:7 And the men which journeyed with him stood speechless, hearing a voice, but seeing no man.

Act 22:9 And they that were with me saw indeed the light, and were afraid; but they heard not the voice of him that spake to me.

Try and picture the first verse as one observing from outside the group, the men outside of the group could not hear the voice, but Saul who was blinded by Jesus could.

The narrative switches from 3rd person into Saul's trying to describe both events from two different perspectives. Some of the events seem to have been written down by word-to ear..Which is how the gospel works, it is spoken.

Then we see the final outcome.

Acts 22.11
My companions led me by the hand into Damascus, because the brilliance of the light had blinded me.

See? It's not so difficult.

Those who were with Paul heard the "sound" of a voice, but did not hear the Words that Jesus spoke to Paul. This is why he said they did not hear what was said.

For instance - if I am in the kitchen and speak to my child, the person in the other room could hear a voice speaking but not hear the words. I would say the the person in the other room did not hear what I said. Make sense?

This is an error in the KJV of Scripture. The translation is poor in Acts 22:9. The Greek supports all three translations, but the preferred translation based on the context of Acts is the NIV (thought for thought/ NA text) or NASB (literal translation/ TR text mostly).

Luke is considered by historians to be one of the premier historians. His accuracy is phenomenal. The records Luke made in Acts have never been disputed by the secular, although the ideas before recent findings were that he was pretty inaccurate. This is not a contradiciton, but simply a poorer translation that you are listening to.

I'd highly recommend reading (or listening to) multiple versions of Scripture. My favorite study aid is a parallel Bible that has both a literal and a thought for thought translation within one book. My favorite is my KJV/NIV parallel Bible. These are great tools for looking up apparent contradictions.

i´m so glad.. i always get shocked when these things show up....
so it seems that:
*they were all shocked by a supernatural event
*they heard speaking
*they saw a light
* the did not understand what the meaning of the words was

Yep, you got it.

The light is not synonymous with someone. They saw the light and they heard the voice, but did not understand what it said and they did not see who it came from. The two verses work together, as long as you are not reading the KJV, which has an error that makes it look like a contradiction. The fact that one says they saw a light and the other says they saw no one do not contradict because they are speaking of two different things.

It is possible to hear a voice but not understand it. Try standing in a busy train station or in a foriegn country. You will hear many voices but not be able to understand them. Paul could understand what Jesus said, but the others could not because it was not meant for them.

Arndt (new standard for NT Greek) and Thayers (old standard for NT Greek) say that the word translated in the KJV can be translated as "to hear" and "to understand." This resolves the conflict between the two verses regarding the KJV statement that they heard the voice in the 9:7 and then didn't hear the voice in Paul's telling in 22:9.

And when we were all fallen to the earth, I heard a voice speaking unto me, and saying in the Hebrew tongue, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me? it is hard for thee to kick against the pricks. (Acts 26:14).......Could it be that the men with Paul did not know Hebrew language?

It is possible, but God could easily have spoken in a language that Paul understood as being Hebrew that was not understood by the others. During the Pentecost, the Holy spirit spoke in ways that the people of all regions could understand at the same time.
