  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

depends. What genre are you looking for?

There are several different genre and storylines. Try checking out some of the anime databases.

Most will explain the genre and list shows that are available...

I tend to stick with shojo anime and manga, mostly school, comedy, some sci-fi and only a teensy ecchi.

Example: I have recently gotten into Naruto. I have made it to about episode 118. (give or take an ep, I have a bad memory atm due to health issues)
I have watched Chobits, Strawberry Egg, DearS, Onegai Sensei and it's sequel.

These are all a little ecchi, but the story line was basically clean in Chobits, Dears and Onegai Sensei... Ai Aori Ayoshi...
Strawberry Egg was about a young teacher that couldn't find a job, and the only one he did was at an all girl's school and male teachers were not allowed... so most the jokes and innuendo was around him cross dressing... whereas in Chobits, the main character finds an anatomically correct android whose memory is wiped completely, and he has to teach her everything from scratch... mostly comedy around her innocence and the fact he was a "typical male"...

However, I have watched other shows such as Azumanga Daioh, which is a really cool comedy type set in Japanese high school...
And I have seen some of School Rumble which was really funny as well.
Ocha Ken is really cute, but it is geared towards little kids and really hokey... DigiCharat was also cute, but super hokey and kind of confusing. Still am trying to figure that one out..

Boys over flowers was another good one (almost done with it), and I have seen the live action which I loved emmensely.. I am hoping a third season comes out!

Sailor moon was good (almost all of it!), and I did like the more recent live action. A little hokey, but it did stick well with the first season of Sailor Moon, of which I was glad. For beginning actors, the actors and actresses did very well considering what they worked with.

Stellvia was a good sci-fi series and very clean..

Noir was really cool, but more of a murder-for hire kind of show.. same for Gunslinger Girl. Loved it, but it was a little disturbing on some points... girls from bad history and health being made basically into a "million dollar man" type and given a job with the police/interpol..

Angelic Layer (prequel to Chobits) was really good.. I highly reccommend that one as a beginner's intro to anime.

Love Hina was interesting, but a bit ecchi.. I mean, a college aged guy with loads of girls in a house, something bad is bound to happen accidentally from time to time...

Midori no Hibi was real good and awfully funny, but it was also ecchi. I mean, a girl who just appears on a guy's hand one day and doesn't go away? LOL!

Ichigo Mashimaro is funny and clean. Centers around little girls who are friends and an older sister... comical issues about just being kids and playing around the house/yard and school related issues. The funniest thing is that one girl is from the UK and speaks perfect Japanese, and goes to school and is introduced as a British child, and everyone assumes she speaks English (and she doesn't).. not to mention her last name is Coppola which also creates issue...

I've seen a few others, but memory fails me atm what their names were or how good or bad they were or what genere they fit into...

School Rumble, Azumanga Daioh, Kanon (2006), The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, Lucky Star, or older series like Robotech (or Macross, Southern Cross, and Genesis Climber Mospeada, the three series that were pieced together to create it; the entire Macross franchise is solid, though). I also just finished watching To Heart recently, and I can confidently recommend that.

You can check at the Anime News Network Encyclopedia, although it doesn't allow a search by age rating, so you'd have to know which series to look at. It's really an invaluable resource - browse around and you can find loads of things to watch.

Dodge anything labeled echei, and read the descriptions (who couldn't tell that Love Hina was going to have at least some sexual content from the description alone). Besides for that, listen to what others tell you. Nothing beats personal experience, so others can say if something is clean or not.

My freinds are always into anime but it is always bad. like sexual and gross. but I would like to know if there is any without that and without so much violence, or am I our of luck?
Look up Hiyao Miyazaki.
It's the best done stuff ever- and probably the rule to which things are compared.

I agree with HadassahSukkot, it depends on the genre and the content your looking for. I mainly watch gundam wing and inuyasha. there is some violence and some sweraing but is not used to much in gundam wing but inuyasha tends to swear now and again but it is alot better the some of the anime i have seen on adult swim latey. if i have to recomend a anime i would recomend gundam wing

The quick, easy answer is "yes."

It is important to understand that in Japan they don't view the animated/drawn medium to be solely for kids the way the US tends to view it. This viewpoint is that it is a valid artform and can be for done for any audience. Which is why the question of "genre" becomes important. Asking "do you like anime" is about as helpful as asking someone if they like music.

Anyway, see other posts for the recommendations (I personally love Naruto... and all of Hayao Miyazaki's stuff... Spirited Away or Howl's Moving Castle would be great starting points).

Things I recommend
Mobile Suit Gundam: 0080 (War in the Pocket): It actually has a good storyline, quite unusual for a Gundam series . . . The only thing Gundam I'll watch, except for the fight scene with the Gouf custom.

Paranoia Agent: It has a lesson too, kids.

Avatar, the Last Airbender: Okay, it's not really anime, but it's still pretty good stuff.

Misc. Girly Mangas: Some of them are actually quite good stuff. They aren't emo, which is unusual for anime in and of itself. Don't ask me why I know any of this. Escaflowne (not the movie), Magic Knight Rayearth and that silly series about magical cards fall into this category. There's an actual word for it too, I believe.

Things I recommend to avoid . . .
Evangelion: The biggest reason you should never say you wrote out of a depression. I can't stand to watch it, it burns.

Gundam Wing: It polluted an entire generation. Beam scythes!? What the!?

Computer Games: That's right, if there's an anime computer game, I assure you it will be adult. Not all of them are actually that bad (I'm not going to name anything good though), it's just there will be adult content.

Wow this place is diverse isn't it! I officially love it here! the last place I was at some of the members refused to watch films, but here has anime- fab. My favourite is my neighbour totoro- it is forkids but why should they have all the fun?;) Whenever I feel ill I just pop it in the dvd player and it gives me a nice warm feeling every time. And it is about as clean as it gets.

I can name several offhand that aren't adult (for the PC). Not that any of them have been licensed into English, mind you, but nevertheless. And it goes without saying that games released on PS2, Dreamcast, etc. are devoid of adult content (and in the case of those, many of them are simply clean editions of the PC versions).

For instance:
Galaxy Angel series
Mai-HiME - Unmei no Keitouju Shura
Planetarian (has a fan-made English patch)
...and while Tsukihime has adult content, the English patch - also fanmade - has an option to remove that content. I don't know if the English patch for Kagetsu Tohya also has that functionality.
Melty Blood
the original version of ToHeart2 was released for the PS2 without adult content - it was released on the PC later with adult content added.

The Touhou series was originally released on PC, and I highly doubt it has adult content even though there are plenty of doujin based on it that do.

Yes, but which pc games are the real sellers in Japan? Hehe, er . . .

In all humility though, you could remove the scant nudity from a few of the good ones and they would make great titles in and of themselves. But the slightly-interactive novel is just a step up from text based games with pictures instead.

From my observations, generally ones from Key (Kanon, Air, Clannad), Type-Moon (Tsukihime, Fate/Stay Night), minori* (Wind -a breath of heart-, ef - a tale of the two), Aquaplus/Leaf (ToHeart, Utawarerumono, Comic Party), etc. Ones that for the most part issue PS2 or Dreamcast versions later. Generally, games that have later had anime adaptations made from them, as the games were already mainstream enough to get the amount of popularity needed to get such adaptations.

*Which also served as the launching point for Makoto Shinkai.

I'll give on the computer games, in most cases. Actually, any computer game that is not popular which you stumble upon in America, that is true. But I have came across many good video games (granted, a good portion are on consols) which are great games which are just like a final fantasy as adult content goes (if not less).

Also, NGE. It has some adult scenes (especially assuming you are watcing the movie), but it should not be watched as an anime watched for entertainment. It carries some serious overtones in it, though it is in fact very hard to understand.
