I've started listening to classical while I read. It is the only music that does not distract me when I read, as I tend to listen to the words of the song when there are vocalists. Truly classical music makes my musical tastes highly eclectic.

I don't know much about classical, so could someone point me in the direction of some good strings and piano classical other than Vivaldi, Bach, Chopin and Mozart?

Maybe you should look around in the store or on the internet, there is so much variation in classical music,If you love very tender sounds or if you wanna go for a bit heavy stuff
u can all find it back in classical music,so many styles and there are alot good composers out there .Yes classical music is very good for the soul,it makes your soul happy and clean
its so pure. classical music will always stay,it will always be the ''REAL'' music, the pure music. there is nothing that is more pretty than classical music,it is attached to the soul and speaks to your soul
Happy listening!! glad you like it ;-)

Hey Dave,

I know what you mean about classical being great to read with, and also it really does expand your tastes, and help you recognize really really bad music thats so prevalent today.
Some of my favorite pieces by composers that you did not mention are Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov's Scheherazade and Tchaikovsky's Concerto 1 in Bb minor.

Ahh...classical music :)

One of my great passions in life, and the first genre of music I ever truly liked. It's kinda funny how I got into it, but it was thanks to Warner Brothers cartoons on Saturday morning. (Who says cartoons can't be educational? ;) )

Anyway, there is so much variety out there. I remember when I was younger that when I listened to the radio back in the 80's, I found myself going "yuck!!" more often than not simply because the complexity that I found listening to classical music wasn't there. (Maybe a bit snobbish, but I think that's why I list bands like Dream Theater and Rush among my favorite bands now.) I grew up loving the music of Bach, Beethoven, and Mozart when I was in elementary school, and it's stayed with me throughout my life thus far.

Others I like:

Schubert, Vivaldi, Brahms, Verdi, Handel, Wagner, etc.

I think my dad has also contributed to that as well...he's an opera affecionado, and to this day, Carmen is probably one of my favorites. I've actually seen that performed, and it was excellent. Aida too.

Hello:wave:

I personally can never listen to music as background. Well, unless I don't like it much. ;) I am so into the music and it is such an experience with me that listening to it as background is just not possible for myself!

I cannot even have conversations with good stuff playing in the background because then I just want to listen to the music. :)

Ah.. I thank God for great music!

Hi,
I am a classical music lover too. Another genre I like is the misused and misunderstood New Age style of music. Basically it's instrumentals, nothing more. I listen to Minnesota Public Radio a lot.

The problem is that when you start to get into classical music, you will begin to pay attention to it's construction melodies etc, to the point where it will distract you too. I can only read without being distracted by classical music, when it's the first time I'm hearing the CD. After that - it's so beautiful, I either listen to it, or turn it off to read a book.

Debussy! His music is very expressive and feels so free. Its like.. you're drifting through a dream! You've probably heard of his "Clair de Lune" or "Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun".

Do a google search for "Syrinx", a flute solo. There are a few sites that offer free samples.. Its one of my favorite pieces of his, though.. Thats because I'm a flute player. :)

I love listening to music if I'm not playing it myself. Reading with classical CD going in the background is very soothing. I define classical music by something one never tires of listening to. You can listen to it innumerable times and never grow tired of it.

same here, i can't think with all the other music on, but classical is all-right. :)

and i don't pay much attention to who the composer is, so long as it sounds good!

LOL, the same thing happens to me!!!

There is this one piece by Rimsky Korsakov that when I listen to it, I just cannot concentrate on anything else! I feel your pain! ^_^
