Hmm...I don't know. I would definitely consider The Clash to be classic rock. Maybe they're more "punk" or whatever (as I've heard them classified before), but that seems weird to me. I don't know that just because a band dislikes the music of Pink Floyd or Led Zeppelin it automatically means that they aren't contained within the same basic musical genre. But I suppose I am basing my reasoning on the fact that I hear both Elvis Costello & the Attractions and The Clash's music on classic rock radio stations, when I also have heard Nirvana and Pearl Jam on the same stations, so yes, you may be right. ;)

Wow! You actually live somewhere that E.C. is played on the radio, hey? I mean, I grew up near Detroit, not exactly a small market, and don't think I've ever heard an Elvis Costello song on the radio. And that's including the "alternative rock" station over in Windsor, Ontario.

All this stuff, right enough, belongs to the same basic genre, which I would call post-Beatles rock 'n' roll (= rock). The Beatles are the pivot upon which rock 'n' roll history turns.

I love the Beatles, I should mention in passing.

Yours,
Jeff

Generally, radio stations don't operate on basis of genre, they operate on basis of category, which encompasses many many genres of vaguely similar types. 'Rock' is a category (the genres come in when discussing the type of Rock - Psychedelic, Southern, Industrial, Punk, Goth, Rock 'n' Roll, Rockabilly, etc.). Similarly, Rock has subcategories, like Alternative (which include some of the specific genres I just mentioned). And then of course those genres can have subgenres (like how Death Rock is commonly considered one of Goth Rock's forebears and/or a subgenre of it).

Classic Rock stations generally stick to your Psychedelic or Acid Rock (think Jefferson Airplane, Steppenwolf, or Jimi Hendrix), Classic Heavy Metal (Zep, Sabbath, Purple), Blues Rock (could include the Stones), Glam (Bowie), Classic Hard Rock (AC/DC and Kiss, if you don't consider them Metal), some early Prog Rock (Rush, maybe King Crimson at a stretch), and maybe even some Arena Rock (Styx, Foreigner, Journey). They might even tiptoe around some late 70s/early 80s Metal acts like Def Leppard, Judas Priest, and even Motörhead or Iron Maiden.

Now, around here I didn't get a really solid exposure to Alternative until one of the local stations became what you could call 'Hard Alternative' (there was an Adult Contemporary-ish Alternative station that existed at the time, and the other station played a lot of stuff that was too hard for that one). Sometime after it launched, it started a weekly Retro program which stuck to playing 70s and 80s Alternative only, with a rare exception of material from the 90s if it was underrated enough. I loved that program, although it seems like it died off sometime in the past couple years.

There had been a general 'Modern Rock' station that played a mixture of new and old Alternative (I'm talking late 90s here, so the 'new' stuff were things like Harvey Danger's "Flagpole Sitta" while the 'old' were The Clash, INXS, and standards from Depeche Mode's and New Order's catalogs, etc.). I didn't really listen to them a lot, but I did from time to time. If they ever played Elvis Costello it was probably "Pump It Up", whereas the other station I mentioned that had the Retro program would pull out "Radio Radio", "Veronica", "What's So Funny...", etc.

This is my kinda person! And this thread had to be the one I used to make my first posting to the forums. Definitely my subject.

Aa a brit, I may have a slightly different focus than some of you but Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin, Rainbow, Nazareth, Pink Floyd, Queen, Supertramp, Manfred Mann's Earth Band, Foreigner, Genesis, Status Quo and ELO are all some of my favourites.

However, my award for the best namecheck so far goes to the Alan, Parsons Project. The "I Robot" and "Pyramid" in particular are classics IMHO.

Thanks! :D Yes, as you may have noticed, my taste is on the progressive side of classic rock. Tales of Mystery and Imagination and I Robot are my favorite Alan Parsons Project albums.

Sorry but one band I can't stand are Cream.
Cream isn't my favourite. In fact, I'll admit that Clapton himself isn't amoung my top favourites (yes, you may faint now), but you at least have to admit that 'Sunshine of Your Love' is an awesome song, yes? :D

The 70s were an excellent era of rock, dont forget about Thin Lizzy, Wishbone Ash, UFO, The Cars, etc.

Check out this Frijid Pink cover of The House of the Rising Sun, a song warning about gambling and drinking btw... ROCKS!
