I've played all 3 and they are awesome. Haven't played in a long time though. It's amazing how they can grab hold of you and pull you in so deep that you play for 30 minutes and WOAH, 5 hours have passed. ;)

I'm a fan of 1 and 2, but the Master of Orion series and Alpha Centauri both show how much else can be done in the genre that Civilization III was laughable to me at best. It's almost as if they were hoping that nobody would notice the improvements and innovations other games had made, but since I had, I couldn't go back to the old formula. That, and Civilization III was much less aggressive. Not that I think that attacking people should be the only strategy in a game, but it should at least be a viable strategy. Take Alpha Centauri. You could win in ways other than conquest, such as by being elected Supreme Leader or cornering the energy market. These are all ways that you very well could win with, and they can even trump combat if played right. You may be fighting a losing war, but with the right diplomacy and defensive tactics it is possible to get elected supreme leader. But then again if someone is planning to be supreme leader it is possible to take your troops and crush them into the ground. I don't always win by force, but I like having the option of winning by force. Having a game as ridiculously defensive as Civilization III just gets stupid.

CIV III did me more harm that good (oh, the wasted hours), but what about Elite? What about Frontier: Elite 2? What about Elite 4 that will be out...eventually?

Then again; the problem with games such as CIV is the the player is limited by the mind of the designer. I can't wait for the CIV game that gives a true; reactionary freedom in the game.

Civ is good. Alpha Centauri is excellent. Both are very addictive! I like Alpha Centauri because, while some of the factions and ideas are a bit ridiculous, you can customize just about anything. And not to mention there are techs I've never even discovered, base facilities and secret projects I've never even built... there's just so much in that game. It's impossible to get bored of it.

I mean no offense to Civ players. I would like to play CivIII. I like the combat in Age of Empires better.
You will probably like Rise of nations especially with expansion. It plays a lot like Age of Empires with a touch of civilization to it. the single player camp is the combine of Risk and RTS. The expansion has four different campaigns while the first just had one : the world map. The weakest part of RoN is the special units of each nation not really all that special. they seem to be very careful keeping all nation balance.

I always seem to have Civ on my pc. I played Civ I to death, then got Civ II, and recently Civ III - and am still playing.

Civ III seems to suit my playing style better, as I'm doing much better than I did in Civ II - or is that just me? ;)

I've also tried AoE, as well as Alpha Centauri, but I always come back to Civ. My RTS game of choice is Red Alert 2. No flames please. :D
