  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Hey guys, I have a rather serious question, although this is going to start out sort of strange because I am basing my question off of a cartoon.

Alright, so I was watching Family Guy the other night on the cartoon network, and the family had to move down south for the witness protection program. They went to a reenactment of the civil war, and they made it so the Confederates won the civil war. I was just wondering how you all think people who believe this in real life would explain why the US is the way it is today if the Confederates won. Because you have to know there are people out there who believe this.

Alabama is about as Confederate as it gets (for you public school students out there, Montgomery was the first capital of the Confederacy) and I honestly don't know anyone who believes that the South won.

Author Harry Turtledove wrote an entire series of novels based on the premise that the south won the civil war.

He carried the series (so far) up to the second world war where for the third time the United Staes of Merica and the Confederate States of America are at war. One of the better parts of the plot is when Louis Armstrong defects to the United States and brings with him chilling evidence of the Confederate "population reductions" (genocide) of African-Americans.

I read Harry Turtledove (loved it), but don't agree with it.

I think slavery would have taken longer to end. It would have ended piecemeal, state by state, and by vote - not executive order. That said - I believe the integration of Blacks would have happened more smoothly and with less civil upheaval.

If the Confederates won - they did a really bad job on those history books...
